Hdtv Question
« on: May 14, 2006, 03:21:00 AM »

This article being the fuel for my fear.
http://www.4colorreb...secret-of-hdtv/

This person states there is latency in HDTV. (For games this means a lag when you hit a button until the reaction of your character.) It appears to me this would only affect non-next gen consoles since he stated it is caused by HDTV upscaling from 480p\i.

So it is my hopefull understanding this will not affect 360 or PS3 correct?

For a more specific question this is the exact model TV I have my eye on at the moment.

I had the smaller 42" version for a while and latency was never a problem. Not to mention that tv also has a game mode.

TEST IT

that's the only way to know for sure. Most of those TVs don't use a true HD resolution meaning that even in 720p there is still some scaling going on.

Yes, it all depends on the individual television.  If you're worried, try to take your console to a store that stocks the television you want, and test it (as twistedS said).  If you are showing the slightest bit of interest in buying a television (even if you're not) to the salesperson, they should let you test it no-problem.

If it helps, I have this TV:

http://www.tacp.tosh...sp?model=46hm95

I have no problems with any lag using the component cables with the 360 or a regular Xbox.

However, I did try to connect an xbox with the coaxial antenna cable through a VCR and there was noticible lag.  I haven't had an opportunity to test if it was the VCR or not since I have a RF adapter for my 360 and my xbox now(for a different TV that I use occassionally).

From what I hear the problem has been most prominent in Samsung DLP's but it may be defeatable with the game mode as has been mentioned.  I'd speculate LCD TV's would have slight lag like LCD monitors since they use the same technology.  I'd expect with a decent one though, you'ld be paying for one with low response times.  I play on a 8ms PC LCD monitor and can't even tell.  I've played on my parent's CRT rear projection and it has no lag whatsoever.
