It's much better when asked in the forums where everyone who would ask a similar question might find the answer.

Often times when people PM me a question I'll tell them to post it in the forums and PM me the link.  tongue.gif

Having seen them in action I think on the 360 (no with other applications) the transcoder provides a better signal then the official VGA cable. As for Video options the console will still only output in 480p, 720p, and 1080i, as it has no knowledge that the transcoder exists, it thinks it's just outputting in component video. This means you have a narrower selection of resolutions as well, but if your monitor can handle those resolutions  you're all set.

...as for the black bars question I wish  I could help but I don't have any experience with VGA transcoders.

Hi Foe-hammer

Ive been searching around the web for 360 bits n pieces and noticed on another site you mentioned you were playing around with the component cable and converting it to VGA. Sounds interesting, but could you answer a couple of quesitons about it?

Firstly, is there an advantage to doing this over the official VGA cable? Will it still allow you to select 720p etc, or will it just give you the same options the VGA cable has?

The reason im asking is im not to impressed with the official VGA cable, so i bought a VD-Z3 to try and convert the component signal to VGA, but it didnt work to well for me. While the image was a lot sharper, and the colours a lot more vibrant, it wouldn't adjust to my screen properly. I had a black bar to the left and along the top of the screen, with white lines running vertically. Also, it wanted to reset itself every minute, not so good!

If im barking up the wrong tree, my apologies, im just a newbie to all this, but want to cover all angles before I have to sell my monitor and try to get a new one (on a tight budget though so i dont know when that will happen!)

Many thanks!

Edit: Sorry for the triple post, my Mac went a bit wobbly. Could someone delete 2 please. Sorry again!

No problem.

There is no difference between a 360 component cable made into a vga cable, and a regular vga cable.  Meaning, the res options will be the same and the same color/contrast issues will be the same.

I'm not sure why you are having those problems when using the VD-Z3 (transcoder) with the 360, because you should not.  Before concluding that is your monitor at fault, i would first try it on a different monitor and see if it produces the same results.  If the results are still the same i would try the VD-Z3 with a regular xbox and see what happens.  If still nothing changes, try the regular xbox and VD-Z3 with another monitor.  If the image is still fubared then your VD-Z3 is bad, and a replacement is required.  If your image is ok, then you might try getting a refund on your VD-Z3, and try the x2vga2 instead.  But that might be too much of a hassile.  It's just a process of elimination.

I currently use an x2vga for my original xbox on a pc crt monitor, and the image quality is great.

What kind of monitor are you using (LCD, or CRT)?

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help guys, very much appreciated. I don't know what went on with the Vdigi and my monitor, but in the end i couldn't be bothered with the whole thing anymore so I gave up and bought a Dell 2405fpw as they were going cheap. From what ive seen its a good monitor for 360 gaming, and I get to plug component directly in. Wish I did this in the first place, but you live and learn. Also I get to play Halo again, I no-longer have to suffer from the 50hz issue! Happy days!!

Oh, and Highlander, great film. Not sure about the rest though....
