Xbox 360 Standard Tv Resolution
« on: April 05, 2006, 06:14:00 PM »

I'm 15 and I have an xbox 360 and my parents will be dead before they can afford an HDTV so I play on a standard 27 inch television.

People always say that it's not impressive on a normal TV and I disagree.  I think it looks very impressive on a standard TV, I acutally prefer the way it looks to an HDTV setting because now I can see a certain ammount of detail on a wall but then see even more when I walk up close to it.  I've played it on an HDTV and I think it looks like all the edges are even more jagged.

I just want anybody who is wondering whether it is worth it if they know they can't get an HDTV that it does still look amazing even without the super high resolution

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I would recommend an eye exam... it's a night and day different between standard and high def. The colors are more vivid, you have more sight in the game, and of course the resolution is higher, which should result in higher detail. Sure, it looks inherently good on a normal TV, but there's way too much difference to not be seen.

First off, ever think why they can't afford that new TV?  It's because they bought you an Xbox...

Regarding the picture quality, I can kind of see where you are coming from. The first time I saw PGR3 on an HDTV I was astonished at how much more pronounced the jaggies were.   However, games with proper anti-aliasing look worlds better on an HD set.

The thing is, you are playing on a standard TV set. The resolution is probably 640x480 when playing Xbox 360 games (could be higher I dunno). At this screen resolution, you are seeing scanlines. These scanlines, plus the added benefit of not having a high screen resolution, prevents the jaggies from being noticeable.

When playing in High Def, you are playing at higher resolutions, and on a much better TV. The colors are better, the picture is much clearer. The scanlines aren't as noticeable. Since the picture is clearer, the jaggies will become noticeable. Sort of ironic, it's like you can have only so much. Antialiasing would fix this, but that's really up to the developers and they only seem to be using 2x AA, and that just doesn't cut it on high-def displays.

Honestly, I wouldn't go blowing all your money on a complete home theater system. I have a 27 inch TV like you (I think), my two xboxs, and my stereo receiver with two speakers. I don't have my Xbox 360 yet, but I will have it soon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif).

Its all good little man...at least you are content with what u got, not like some other whiny ass tweens who harass the shiznit out of their parents for what they don't have.  Trust me dog, I got a 27inch WEGA I had for 6 years, runnin my 360 and let me tell you, it looks much better than my xbox1 looks on it and that's all that counts.  I mean, I'm 26 with a wife and 2 kids bro, and sure I could get a HDTV but then I'd be gaming on the streets while the kids feed off the 360 vents for warmth (IMG:style_emoticons/default/muhaha.gif).  As long as I can run online with the boys I'm satisfied, till of course Tim Hortons (Canadian coffee joint) blesses me with a 50" Panny Viera (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) ...hold tight son and when u or your parents can sacrifice a couple g's then be thankful

haha, that made me laugh a little  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . I would suggest since you are 15 get yourself a 17 or 19 lcd monitor for $200-300 and play it in your room. Just make sure not to go too cheap and get a monitor with 8ms or less refresh rate. In a few years you can get yourself a job and buy your own 27" etc hdtv.

it depends on the game, and on the television
some tvs dont really display at true HD resolutions, and so jaggies become more pronounced
some games also dont have AA on, or the resolutions are true HD (like PGR3)

however, games like oblivion look awesome on an hdtv, no jaggies at all

I am 16 and have a Xbox 360 but i'm in the same situation.. I can't afford HDTV yet!! The reason I have a Xbox 360 is because I 5 finger discounted about $2,000 if you know what I mean (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) So I won't be expecting a nice TV set until that time rolls around again. And yes I spent all my money already..  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

HDTV prices keep dropping.. I'm sure you could muster up the cash for one.. Just save your money from now until Christmas... or better yet. You should be able to get a job (The legal age limit here in Alaska is 15.. but then again things are a little different here.. The legal adult statute is 19 instead of 18 and they card everyone for Tobacco regardless of how old they look. But I think the de-facto national age limit for employment is 16.)

[edit: speaking of Alaska age restriction laws.. Everyone is carded for tobacco, but in regards to alcohol, they merely ask for your birthdate, unless you obviously appear to be a minor. (with the exception of nightclubs/bars)]

I disagree with what u say about not being able to afford it ever... Considering by 2008-2009 they want everything to be HDTV no more SDTV, SDTV will be Eliminated kinda like VCRs are pretty much gone because of DVD players.

He's right to an extent.
I've been gaming on a Sony Wega 480i CRT via components and it looked a lot better than gaming through the dreaded yellow composite jack.
An old school TV does jaggy wonders, it does a good job of hiding them.
People complained about how good PGR3 looked, but it came with pretty bad jaggs.
On my Sony, I couldn't see ish. I thought you guys were all nuts.

That's until I got my new Sammy LCD over a week ago and saw the jaggs for myself.
Not only in PGR3 but even the backgrounds in DOA4.

So I see where this guy's coming from.
But I take my 720p along with a few jaggies over a watered down picture in 480i/p any day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I'm 17, still at school etc. I use my pc monitor, works great, even higher resolution than an HDTV, and nice and cheap (about 150 quid for a 17"). I have to sit quite close, but its the same position as when i use the pc anyway, so it's fine.

I am however, saving for a 26" sammy lcd tv. All i can suggest mate, is to get a job. I work in the food area of a large department store chain in the holidays, and because i am still at home (not paying for food/rent yet) it earns a fair amount (200 quid in 5 days).

If you're 15, get a paper round, work in a warehouse, whatever gets you that little bit of extra cash towards the lcd monitor or hdtv. The secret to doing anything you don't want to- keep your eye on the prize.

If affording the TV is really the problem, you guys might try the option I went with. I bought a projector and blacked out my living room.  This things got 1080i high-def, DLP, 2500 lumens,  and cost about $1600 after tax.  That's still not cheap, I know, but when you consider I have a 76" (could be 264" if I had a big enough room)screen, it's quite a bit cheaper than a TV.  Also, I dont have near the problem with the jaggies as I've seen in many plasma/LCD TV's. I still see them, just not as bad.

Keep in mind they can tend to overheat if your house is very warm (80 degrees or warmer).  So if it is you want to maybe think of other options.  Nothing hurts like when you're online, about to shoot someone, and the TV says it's shutting off.  But, if you can afford to run the a.c. all day it's awesome.  If you don't trust me go to a home theater store and they will probably let you see one in action.

The problem with buying a projector though is that every 1500 hours or so, you will have to replace the bulb in it, thats about £300.  It all depends on what type of gamer you are, if you play it for a couple of hours a night and all weekend, that bulb aint going to last long.  You could get a descent HDTV ready 20" flat screen for about £300.00 nowadays, if you shop about.
