Component Hookups To Sdtv?

Hell call me old fashioned but I always seem to confuse composite with components and vice versa.
All I know is that I've been gaming on a Sony Wega 480i CRT via the blue, green, and red inputs.
And it looks so much better than playing through the yellow jack.

Even on my Xbox, it made a huge difference....

What model Sony?

Mine's a Sony as well....  I get nothing but scrolling green lines.....

I think if your TV has component inputs its technically a EDTV.

No, its not.   For a TV to be deemed "EDTV" capable, it has to be able to show a progressive image.   Thats what EDTV means.   Normal TV is called "Standard Definition", or SDTV.   A TV that can display 480p is called "Enhanced Definition", or EDTV.   And then, obviously, you have "High Definition", or HDTV.

SDTV = 480i
EDTV = 480p
HDTV = 720p/1080i/1080p

Having component inputs on a TV doesn't automatically mean you have EDTV.   I have an older 27" Philips set in the basement of my house with component inputs, but its only capable of 480i.   You just need to look at the actual connection on the back of the set to determin what you have.

If it says "Y-Cb-Cr" next to the component inputs, you just have an SDTV set.   You will only get 480i output.   It will look a little better than S-Video, but the resolution is the same.   But, if you have "Y-Pb-Pr" next to the inputs, you have an EDTV.   You can get 480p video through those connections.

And yes, you can use the 360 on a normal SDTV with the component cables.   While I was waiting for my VGA cable to arrive, I had my 360 hooked up to the older Philips in my basement.   Using the supplied component cables that came with the 360, with the cables set to "TV", it worked just fine.   I used to have a DVD player hooked up on the same set, also with component cables, and that worked just fine as well.

Just make sure you aren't trying to send an SDTV a 480p image.   As long as you have the component cable selector switch set to "TV", you should be ok.

I appreciate the comments.

My TV is NOT an EDTV,  but simply an SDTV - Sony Wega.

I have had the original XBox hooked up just fine with component cables.

However,  I can't for the life of my get the 360 to work via component cables.

It seems that no matter what,  it appears to be sending a progressive signal,  even when in "TV" mode on the cable.

In the Dashboard,  the only choices are 480p, 720p and 1080i.

What the hell am I missing?

The only thought I have is that I am going through a receiver - Would that make any difference?  The Xbox worked just fine like that though.

dude, the only way to get 480i is to physically move the switch on the cables themself to tv mode instead of hdtv. the rest will be done by itself.

Sounds to me like the 360 might just be "locked" in to HD mode.   Try hooking the 360 up using just the standard composite cables.   The Red-White-Yellow cables.   That for sure won't send a progressive signal.   Seems like the 360 thinks it should be ok to send a 480p signal.   But, if you set it to "TV" mode, and just hook it up with the composite inputs, hopefully you'll be able to get the 360 back into 480i mode.   Then, all you would have to do is just leave the switch in "TV" mode, but just switch the cables back to the components.  After that, I don't know what to tell you.   Best of luck.

When I set the switch to "TV" mode,  and use the composite (yellow) cable to connect to the TV,  it displays just fine.

At the same time,  I have the component cables hooked up as well.

"Video 2" is Composite (Yellow) - Displays fine.  With the console still on,  I switch to "Video 4" which is component and get moving vertical green/red lines.

So you're absolutely positive the component cables can output 480i?

OK,

Found the problem.

ID 10T error.

Basically,  one the monster component cables from the receiver going to the TV had come ever so slightly loose.

I guess when in doubt,  check the cables...

the Xbox 360 doesn't support SDTV via component... it sucks but that's the way it is  dry.gif

Funny thing because I got it to work.  I just have my cable on standard and I put my cables (red, green, blue) in my color stream connects and it worked.  Looks compleatly amazing on component.  My TV is Sansui 27 in flatscreen.  hmm, really you guys cant get it to work?

I think I figured out why it worked for me I check the back of my TV and it says Y (green) -Pb (blue) -Pr (red) so my Tv is a EDTV which supports 480P (a SDTV just supports 480i)  which is probably why the cables work for me in component.  huh.gif

I think those cables on component only work if your tv is a EDTV which can display in component at 480p.  I believe anyway.  I dont think the cables are designed for anything lower then 480p for component.  Hmm it still should work for a SDTV though just as long as its on tv and on hd, weird if it doesnt...I guess the cables just where not set up that way.
