Is The Xbox 360 A Progressive Dvd Player?
« on: March 16, 2006, 10:18:00 AM »

hi every body,i recently bought my xbox 360.about 3 days ago...i am using the vd-z3 component to vga transcoder, which made wonders 4 my xbox 1 ,and now i currently make use of it with the xbox 360!I am completely satisfied with the quality image on games but i seem to have problem on showing dvd movies in progressive scan.........I live in greece, and we here have pal machines ,so at first the image did not show until i set the settings to pal 60 and the progressive scan to 720p,and that was enough 4 my transcoder to recognise it and display ot accurately..but when i threw a pal dvd(mind that i have set the 360 on 720p)the monitor i use displayed 50hz,and my transcoder just did nt recognise it as a progressive signal, otherwise
it should have been displayed........any ideas why is this happening and what should i do in order to get  prog scan dvd playback?(games and trailers i downloaded, display perfectly)thanks

First of all the 360's dvd movie playback is only 480p/540p (for pal users), it does not support upscaling 720p/1080i.  Second, i believe that all progressive signals are 60Hz, and that is why you have to use PAL 60 to get it to work on a transcoder (I have the x2vga, which is basically the same thing).

I personally would not recommend the 360's dvd movie playback.....the quality sucks, and it does not upscale.  Instead use the original xbox with xbmc, not only is the picture quality far superior but it upscales to 720p and 1080i.

Many thanks Foe-hammer!I just hoped that the 360 already had the potential playing in upscaled progressive scan dvd movies,i dont really intend to reduce the lifespan of my 360 's drive on movies, only in the absolutely necessary formats(xbox+xbox360 games that is!)just wanted to see how a movie looks on xbox 360...Thanks again!by the way xbox360 rocks,at least in games, now that oblivion is coming out..

The fact that the 360 doesn't have a DVI/HDMI cable is why it doesn't upscale. In order to upscale, DVD players must use a protected format. Otherwise there'd be alot of heat coming from the MPAA (among others, I'm sure). So the "potential" is there, juss not the means.

That being said, can you recommend any good component cables for the original xbox?  I went to snag a set at CC and they were $60 for a set of 3rd party monster cables.  Does MS make a set? What does everyone prefer?

MS makes its own for $30-40.  I'd recommend those.  If you cannot find them new, for some reason, get some used at ebay or a game shop.
