IMO DTS sounds better then Dolby Digital, but i noticed that the 360 does not even have an option to enable DTS.  The orignal xbox supported (had the option to enable in the dashboard) DTS, but not the 360?  What gives?

edit: I just played a DTS movie and yeah it outputs DTS

as far as games, techinally since the 360 decodes the dd through software not hardware. it could support dts in game just as well. i imagine the reason it doesnt though is support and lisceneing costs

Thanks for the info.

So DTS is only available for movie playback, while DD is the only option for games.  Too bad, because like you said, DTS is much better.  DD is better then no 5.1, i guess.

I only use the original xbox for movie playback via xbmc, so i guess all is well.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong (there is a good chance I am), but I thought the difference between dolby digital and DTS was that the DTS signal was never converted to analog.   My reciever will automatically switch between settings....   When I boot the 360, the opening screen is only in stereo... Once it hits the dashboard it switches to dolby digital.   Some games it will stay at dolby D, other games my DTS light will flick on.  The DTS light is always on during video playback.    I guess what I'm wondering is what prevents a game from outputing in DTS?  Isn't it my reciever that would be converting it to analog?

I don't believe there is anything preventing games from outputting DTS... it's just that they don't bother, I can't think of 1 Xbox 1 game that supported DTS.

If a 360 game DID include it they would have to provide the option to enable it in the game's own menu since the option is missing from the dashboard.

The two biggest differences between DD and DTS

DTS has a higher bit rate (and thus less compression)
DTS's ES has discrete 6th and 7th channels past 5.1 while DD's EX has matrixed 6th and 7th channels past 5.1

That's pretty much it... though unless you spent a few grand on your setup I doubt you'll hear the differences between them.

Also it's important to note that the DVD standard requires DD and or PCM to be present on the disc, so if they include DTS it must ALSO include one of those... and since DTS takes up about 3.5 times as much space, the video quality tends to suffer a bit on DTS encoded discs.

I don't know where you got the idea that DD was analog ever? AFAIK it's not. perhaps you're thinking of Dolby Pro Logic?
