Watching Videos On 360 & Winxp Mce
« on: March 09, 2006, 02:32:00 PM »

Hey,

I've done some research on this topic and have only come up with one answer... you can't watch videos on the X360 like a modded-Xbox unless they are from Marketplace or streamed from a MCE PC.

I own a laptop and really want to be able to stream videos to my X360. Could I still install MCE onto my laptop and do this WITHOUT a TV tuner?

Also, is it possible to hook the X360 up to my external hard drive via USB and somehow transfer the files onto my X360 HD?

I apologize if this topic has been covered.  sad.gif

Thanks in advance.

yeah you can...
I recently reformatted my desktop and picked up XP MCE, it works great, I don't have a Tuner in that PC either so it's not necessary. The Media Center interface is very slick (has the same fluid motions as the dashboard) The only thing I dont like about it is it's not configrable enough and trying to find options to set it up how you like is difficult. I spent about 20 minutes just trying to specify which folders I wanted it to grab it's MP3s from instead of auto searching my entire computer...  dry.gif

But on a whole I like it, and running the Extender is like remote admining into the media center interface, very cool...

as for transfering files to your Xbox 360 HDD from an external HDD... no you can't do that. files on the 360 HDD can come from 3 places
-Created by the Xbox 360 (like save games)
-Downloaded from Xbox Live
-WMA files ripped by the Xbox 360

THATS IT.

Wow. Thats a very detailed reply. Thank you so much.

I'm currently running WinXP HE. If I plan to install MCE, can I just upgrade? Or do I need to reformat my HD?

Thanks again twistedsymphony. I've been looking for this informatoin for a long time!  biggrin.gif

Here's a tip that I use with ALL of my PCs... partition off the hard drive, leave 20GB or so for the OS and other programs and use the other partition for all of your files, then whenever you need/want to wipe out Windows it's no big deal  because you don't have to back anything up... the biggest hassle is you need to re-install all your applications. If you DO happen to have anything you need to back up it's as simple as moving it to the other partition before your wipe out your windows partition, no discs no worries  smile.gif

Is it possible to setup a "shiter" machine with XP MCE on it which has the shares of my main PC mounted as network drives. Then would it be bale to stream said movie to the xbox360 MCE interface?
The reason i see this as being possible as the network drives on the MCE machine would be the same as having the media directly on the machines and feeding it to the xbox360?

I sure hope this is possible as i have a few machines lying around doing nothing that i could put XP MCE on and act as a "middle man"

And if this worked does that mean the xbox360 can play all sorts of videos... xvids, divx, WMV, mpg, etc , etc. Or does that depend on the codecs on the MCE machine?

yeah you can use a "shittier" PC, I actually build a PC out of spare parts I had laying around last week, it's a P3 700MHz and it runs MCE like a champ, it's not the 2005 version, it's an older version I had that used to be on another one of my PCs (only the 2005 version works with the 360 supposedly). I'm fairly certain shared network drives will stream right over on to the 360 with the appropriate MCE version.

As for what videos you can play WMV only... sorry
there is however people trying to fix that: http://www.runtime360.com/

Thanks for your reply twistedsymphony!

Yeah after making that post I stumbled across the transcoder thread. Which is probably what I will have to try as basically every video I have is xvid.

hmmmm cant wait till the xbox360 gets chipped biggrin.gif
Im sure it will happen one day, until then . ol' blackie (original xbox) stays put.
