anyone have experience using the decoder with closed type cans? specifically Audio Technica ATHAxxx series which is about 60 ohms powered by an amp?
does the surround signal carry to the headphone in spite of going through the amp? thanks.

The Pioneer SE-DIR800 are closed type cans, and they work great.  The surround signal will carry just fine when amped.  That is actually how i had my set up initially when i was using wired headphones.  Whether it is amped before the decoder, or after, it makes no difference.

And so was I. wink.gif

The creative decoder (i had both the creative and Pioneer decoder) is just as good as the Pioneer decoder.  The reason i brought up the Pioneer is because its cans are closed, and that having closed type cans would be the same on the creative decoder.  The difference of closed vs semi-closed type cans on the creative decoder is the same difference as it would be on any type of system, whether it was stereo or what not; it's a matter of preference.

And when i was using the creative decoder (sold it to my bro), i used an amp with it.  But regardless of decoder, amping it will not negatively affect the 5.1 surround processing.

Very useful topic.  I've been eying over surround sound headphones for a while now.  I recall hearing about Creative's offering, but forgot about it.  Got the Gigaworks S750 and the matching decoder from them and couldn't be happier with their quality when it comes to audio equipment that goes beyond the computer.  Sounds like this will be a perfect thing to use in my new apartment, and portable so It'll be easy to use in bedroom and living room.  Might get wireless headphones later on to go with it if I feel the need.

Well i just got the creatives in today and i absolutely love them.  My parents have a 5.1 in the den that ive used for movies but im not really experienced with the top of the line systems.  I just have to say i really like the phones and for the price they are perfect! the sound is very  big and open and doesnt sound bottlenecked into your ear like stereo headphones.  it has the option to switch between analog and digital sound and there is a very distinct difference.

i find the actual headphone really comfortable and cable very long but not too long.  i also managed to pick up some energizer 2500 mAh rechargables at traget for $20(4 batteries and a charger).  i appreciate hammer for gettin the thread started and helpin me go the right router with picking headphones.  and also everyone else who help me in pm's.  thanks a lot guys and feel free to pm me if you have any questions!

Glad I sticked with my Creative then..... but I wish there was an option to use an ac adapter instead of batteries, because they always die at the moment of highest tension...    but than again, just to play on my 360 I have turn on the monitor, my xbox 360, my x2vga2 and then my HQ2300D   its just to much work and cables to play a game  tongue.gif

Hey, beowulfx, "nice to see you again, Macleod".

The creatives are every bit as good as the wireless pioneers, in terms of sound quality.  But i must stay, that having it be wireless is very nice.

Wireless is nice, but its just to pricy compared to the Creative ones.

The Creative because the sony does not support 'dolby headphone technology'.

Just what i said.  Sony does not have 'Dolby Headphone' technology, but have their own headphone technology that is not as good.  'Dolby Headphone' is different and independent from 'Dolby Digital 5.1'.  And just because a device can decode Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 does not have anything to do with how their headphones handle the info to produce a convincing 5.1 effect in a pair of headphones.

The Sony MDR-DS1000 do not have the bottom Dolby headphone option, like this picture of the creative decoder has.

If it does not have the 'Dolby Headphone' option, then do not get it.

but what is dolby headphone? what`s the difference between dolby headphone and dolby digital? cause most movies and games use dolby digital. if a movie uses dolby digital, that`s what I`ll hear in the headphones, not dolby headphone. or am I wrong?

'Dolby Headphone' is turned on along with 'Dolby Digital', or 'DTS'.

'Dolby Digital' 5.1 and 'DTS' 5.1 only seperates the channels into 5.1 directions.  They do not, and cannot create the 5.1 experience within a pair of normal headphones (of which is only two speakers).  'Dolby Headphone' technology creates this 5.1 experience, and makes it possible with a pair of normal headphones.  Sony uses their own 5.1 headphone technology to create this experience.

If this still does not make sense, do some research on the subject before you ask any more questions here.
