It's not the headphones that need to support 5.1, it is the decoder with dolby headphone technology that produces the 5.1 surround in any kind of headphone.

Got my PIONEER SEDIR800C 5.1 surround sound wireless headphones 2day. all i can say is holy shit. these things are 100% thoro. The sound is absolutely amazing using the digital input, its like being at the movie theater. these things truly emulate the 5.1 surround sound experience. i jump everytime i got shot in ghost recon (note: could easily hear where the bullets were coming from) or crashed in burnout. i'm telling yall these thing are like -wow! straight up. for those who got the dough get these bad boys asap. one

Those look pretty good, except for the cans (actual headphones) head band is all plastic with no padding; very uncomfortable.

For around $100 the creative ones are your best bet.  The only problem with them is that the decoder unit does not accept a power pack, but only accepts 2AA batteries.

Also while sony uses dolby digital they do not use dolby surround headphone technology, but use their own surround headphone technology.  Dolby surround headphone technology is a must to have imo (they have invested more $ into it, and have been developing it longer then sony has).

Beware of the 'the graphics guy' website that was mentioned that sell the PIONEER SEDIR800C headphones.  They don't even let you know that the headphones are 'out of stock', and on 'backorder'.  But they will sure as hell take your order.  I've since ordered from a different place that had them in stock, and have tried to cancel my order from 'the graphics guy'.  Problem is i cannot get a hold of them by phone, so i've left many a message via phone and email over the last 5 days and they have not returned my messages or cancelled my order.  I was reading their return policy and they state that they only allow cancellations under 'rare' circumstances.  Well considering my order has been in the 'Pending' stages for the past 14 days, and they didn't mark it as out of stock or back order, they better cancel my order or i'll refute it with my credit card company. grr.gif

Update on the Sony MDR-700 headphones i bought.

They are horrible uncomfortable.  The do not fit around your entire outer ear,  but squish the hell out of them until you wish they'd fall off.  Not recommended for playing video games or watching movies; activities that have you wearing them for over an hour period of time.

Well i finally got through to them on the phone after the 10th call and message left, and all it was was one big pissing match.  The guys at 'thegraficsguy' are complete assholes.  The dude i was talking to yelled at me the whole time, while calling me a liar and a few cuss words.  I couldn't even get a word in with all his yelling, and then he hung up.  I immediately called him back and told him, before he could go off again, that i would call my CC company and tell them that any charges by them was not authorized by me, and that i would refute it.  I then told him at that point that he could then shove the headphones up his ass, and enjoy them all day long. grr.gif  Fun, fun.

About an hour later i recieved an email stating that my order had been cancelled as of my request.  Must have got through to him. laugh.gif

On a lighter note, my pioneer headphones will arrive this wednesday from another place who actually had them in stock for $295 shipped. beerchug.gif

Well i just got the creatives in today and i absolutely love them.  My parents have a 5.1 in the den that ive used for movies but im not really experienced with the top of the line systems.  I just have to say i really like the phones and for the price they are perfect! the sound is very  big and open and doesnt sound bottlenecked into your ear like stereo headphones.  it has the option to switch between analog and digital sound and there is a very distinct difference.

i find the actual headphone really comfortable and cable very long but not too long.  i also managed to pick up some energizer 2500 mAh rechargables at traget for $20(4 batteries and a charger).  i appreciate hammer for gettin the thread started and helpin me go the right router with picking headphones.  and also everyone else who help me in pm's.  thanks a lot guys and feel free to pm me if you have any questions!

beerchug.gif Glad to hear you are happy with them.

I recieved my Pioneer SE-DIR800 headphones yesterday, and am not overly thrilled with them.  My creative unit and headphones produced a better, richer, sound for a third of the cost.  I hoping that once the headphones have time to 'brake in', that they will open up more and sound less 'tingy'.

My biggest gripes with them are:

1) as mentioned, they sound 'tingy' compared to the creative headphones.

2) Not loud enough.  Also when the volume is maxed, there is a slight hissing that accompanies it.

3) Cannot use my pocket amp with the cordless headphones to give it more 'umph'.

Pluses:

1) Cordless

2) Headphones are better built and more comfortable then the creative headphones (although currently the sound is not as good as what i get with the creative headphones).
