Hd-dvd Movies And Hdmi
« on: February 15, 2006, 04:40:00 PM »

I just came to a horrible reality.  Since HD-DVD only allows for movies to be played via HDMI, does that also mean that you have to have an HDTV or computer monitor that also has HDMI hookups?  That would sure alienate many potential customers who do not have displays that accept HDMI.

Plus,  since MS will be having HD-DVD built into computers that also would require computer monitors to have HDMI hookups.  Not to mention the upcoming HD-DVD player for the 360.

Shit balls; i hope this is not the case.

yeah thats the sad reality with next gen dvds both HD DVD and BLU Ray use HDCP to display at any res above 480p. So yeah to watch any next gen dvds you will need a display that supports HDCP and the only way to send HDCP is over HDMI (and some DVI-D) so yeah pretty much any computer monitor out right now is shit out of luck even most of the dvi based ones because they don;t support hdcp.

I am glad my TV has HDMI... but sucks for anyone with an pure analog display.

well at least this is till its hacked and the HDCP is stripped from it tongue.gif

yeah I really don't know how PCs will deal with it... the security standards for both HD-DVD and BRD have been changing quite frequently, I'm not really sure what they call for now.

The idea with HDCP is that you can't high-jack the signal from the video cable and use that to rip the video.

I think protecting it there is rather ridiculous as 99% of the piracy will probably happen ripping the video directly from the discs (like people do with DVDs)... but whatever no-one ever said DRM was done intelligently.

I for one am banking on someone hacking HDCP, or at least hacking a specific player or two to output in HD over analog... My 19" LCD on my computer is the only digital video ready display I own and it doesn't support HDCP, nor do I want to use it for watching movies.

hdcp will be a little more complicated then css... dont count on it being hacked anytime soon.  Reason I say that.. is the discs will be encrypted as well as the data streams.  Not going to be as easy to hack.

I think its bull they do this. My family bought our 73" Mitsubishi Diamond about 3.5 years ago and personally I think the HD picture can stand up to 90+% of the new TVs, but I get screwed out of watching High Def movies because of piracy..... Makes me so angry

I guess they already have devices out that will bypass the HDCP copy protection, and convert digital to analog.

Check it out here.

Too expensive for me, but hopefully more devices of this nature will come out that will be less expensive.

If anything is a good "screw you" to the DMCA and the movie industry.  What did they think would happen?

Im sorry, i dont like greedy-ass movie corperations. Lucas, can kiss my white-irish ass for all i care. He dident even loose half of what he claimed to when star wars III came out. But, this is humanity, and i guess greed does get the best of us all...
