Xbox 360 + 1080p = Possible?
« on: February 12, 2006, 02:18:00 PM »

Is it possible for the Xbox 360 to support 1080p in the future? Is one software update enough? Any ideas? Links about this?

this is a hardware limitation and not software. the 360 while it has the power to do so can not because it can only provide analog signals and i dont think t hat u can have 1080p w/o hdmi or dvi. i could be wrong though

Yes it already does 1080p but its split into an interlaced format by the chipset that converts it to the analog 1080i signal. So yes it can and no it cant, because the hardware talking to the TV doesnt support it.

But, they could add a 1920x1080 mode to the VGA cable. Why its missing is anybodys guess. The highest option with the VGA cable is 1366x768, which is there to match most of the 30 and 32" LCDs out there. The 1280x1024 option was already added via a patch after launch.

A computer GPU just like the ATI Xenos does not work in interlaced, with v-sync enabled it renders full frames and full frames alone. Thats 1920x1080. It is only interlaced later.

Just like the xbox1 games on an SD tv are 480p 640x480 ALL THE TIME, just the signal varies between 480i and 480p depending on which singal the tv chipset is told to put out.

So if you think the 360 is somehow processing every other horizontal line of a frame in the digital hardware, its not. Only an SLI system would be capable of doing that in a way that makes sense (where GPU 0 does even lines and GPU 1 does odd lines).

If an Xbox 1 can do 720p and 1080i, then WHY CAN'T AN XBOX 360 DO 1080P?  blink.gif

Well if it werent for the PS3 hype machine we woudlnt even be having this discussion.

So to answer you why not, because 1080p is not a widely accepted standard. Almost no display supports it neither through HDMI nor DVI nor component. So using it as a marketing gimmick is just typical Sony BS.

Read the recent PS3 devkit article at kikizo and you'll find out the PS3 devs are all aiming at 720p with upscaled 1080i/p just like on the 360. The nvidia devs even say "resolution is the killer of graphics" and were developing the RSX to target 720p not 1080.

Thus, the PS3 1080p will be nothing but an upscale done by the PS3 hardware (unless the game specifically supports native 1080). The same result can be achieved on a 1080-native display by letting the display upscale 720p to 1080p, instead of the 360 doing the upscaling.

With the PS2 even 480p was hard to come by, and on the xbox1 you can count the 1080i games in one hand and 720p with two. So now instead of being happy that all our games are or will be 720p native and widescreen, Sony has managed to get you doubting the 360 with simple empty words and hype. Success for Sony.

Now add what they said about running TWO 1080p displays at once. If you believe stuff like that then what can we do.

it's hard to say if support will ever come. the scaling and video encoding is done by a propriatary MS chip developed by their WebTV division. So it litterally has nothing to do with the GPU's capabilities and everything to do with that WebTV chip... which we know NOTHING about.

so your equasion should read more like

Faith * (MS + WebTV) = 1080p on the 360
