Converting Xbox & Xbox 360 Vga To Dvi
« on: January 17, 2006, 01:14:00 PM »

I recently purchased a 47" BigScreen HDTV, and it loaded with all the connections you would need to connect external components, including a DVI connnection..
I have an Xbox and also an Xbox 360.. I want to know if there is some reason why a person could not purchase the VGA cables for either the Xbox or the Xbox 360 and then add a VGA to DVI adapter, and then connect the adapted vga to dvi cable into the DVI slot to take advantage of the HD capabilities between the console/s and the display unit?
Then all you would have to do is either use the audio red and white cables for the audio, with the xbox vga cable..Or in the case of the Xbox 360, also us the optical audio for sound?
Any help would be appreciated..

There is no special reason to convert your VGA connector to DVI. The signal through the cable will still be analog with all its known shortcomings.
To have digital transmition we need the Xbox360 to produce digital signal from its AV port which is not happening yet.

Instead, a reason to use a DVI connector, is if your TV has only DVI input or the VGA is used. The DVI interface can handle analog signals too over its pins.

Thanks for your insight to my post...
My observation is that if a an Xbox or Xbox 360 VGA cable can connecto to a VGA monitor and render hi res images, 480p,720p,1080i,, then connecting a VGA to DVI adapter to the VGA cable should also do the same through my DVI slot on the back of my HDTV....Correct??
My tread is for the purpose of trying to utilize my DVI connector on my HDTV with my xbox or xbox 360.
Thanks,

*sigh* it's not possible... read the sticky

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=408961

There are essentially 2 types of video.... Analog Video and Digital Video...

VGA only carries an analog video signal

HDMI only carries a digital video signal

DVI can carry both an analog AND digital video signal at the same time (though different wires in the connector)

When you use a VGA to DVI ADAPTER the signal is still analog, the digital signal section of the DVI connector is simply NOT USED.

When you use a DVI to HDMI connector it simply IGNORES the analog signal all together... So you see it's not actually changing the signal, it's simply changing the shape of the connector. Hence why it's an ADAPTER.

so using your daisey chain of adapters would get you a big nothing... as if you'd never even pluged anything into your TV at all...

To change a pure analog signal to a pure digital signal requires an active CONVERSION of the signal.
VGA to DVI/HDMI CONVERTERS are very expensive... and offer very little to no improvment in quality (really the only benifit is fixed pixels) http://store.yahoo.c...xt-vga2dvi.html

(notice the difference between and adapter and a converter)

i've said it elsewhere, my Philips TV only has DVI connection, using the adapter, i can connect the X360 VGA cable. but i'm not 100% sure (doesn't say enywhere in the manual), but i think my DVI input is DVI-I, so if your HDTV/or whatever is DVI-D (found mostly on LCD PC monitors), then it will only accecpt Digital signal

5. What is the difference between DVI-I vs. DVI-D?

These are the two most confusing digital connectors available. DVI-D allows for digital only signal transmission. However, DVI-I allows for digital or analog signals to pass over this cable/connector. You could have a VGA connector on one end of a cable and a DVI-I connector on the other and transmit an analog signal to the display. You could also have a DVI-I or DVI-D connector on one end and transmit a digital signal. The DVI-D male connector will connect/transmit with a DVI-I female. The DVI-D female connector will not connect/transmit with the DVI-I male. Contact us if you have further questions about these connectors.

Added note to continuing post..
My DVI input on my television is DVI with the one horizontal on the side,,According to a list that is a DVI-D..
I guess I am trying to figure out if there is a way to make the xbox or xbox 360 throw their goodness up on my screen through my DVI port on the Television..
Is there a way to make a DVI cable by using the Xbox VGA cable or forXbox 360, using its VGA cable, so it still has the official part the plugs into the video port on the consoles but your moded cable now has a DVI connector on the end..???
It would seem to me that if it can be done then doing it with the xbox360 vga cable would be easier since it is suppose to render the spectrum of resolutions up to 1080i, so maybe the xbox 360 vga cable would have more compatible wiring if trying to create a DVI cable.
I guess I am trying to understand why I can hook up my computer with its radeon 7800 DVI-I out to my DVI in on my television and play PC games in fullscreen then why cant this be accomplished with the Xbox 360..I am also able to play my Xbox on my computer monitor via an Innovations VGA converter box,,But why not being able to do that same thing through my DVI on my television??
Also, seeing as how the Xbox 360 upcoverts or upscales games on its own then an external signal converter should be rendered useless..
So, Xbox 360 VGA cable connected to a VGA to DVI adapter is still useless?
Have you tried this?
I am looking for replies from others how have actually tried these things..Not looking for theory..
Thanks for all replies,

do you not listen or understand?

twisted has already answered your question.

at the mo there is NO WAY to get a pure digital signal from your 360.

YOU ARE ABLE to use a VGA to DVI adaptor dongle to use the input but it will still be an analogue signal.

you are able to plug your pc into the set because your PC GFX card had a DVI out which is sending a digutal signal through it.

your 360 is only sending an analogue signal. you CANNOT make a homemade DVI cable because there is no digital signal for it to use.

the VGA connected to DVI is not useless at all. you will still get full glory HD gaming only on an analogue signal.

comprende?

if not i think we need to get twisted to lay the smack down on ur ass!!

yes thank you Gazcoigne

DVI-D is DIGITAL ONLY... the ONLY way to make a VGA output work with a DVI-D input is with that $275 converter box I posted above... and honestly quality can only go downhill from what you start with so don't expect it to be Digital quality.

DVI-I is DIGITAL AND ANALOG... your PC outputs both at the same time on the same cable the reason you can convert it to HDMI is because your PC is outputting a digital signal for it to grab, and it completely ignores the analog signal.

If your TV had a DVI-I input then it would be able to accept a VGA signal through an adapter...

In a simple sense:

DVI-D == HDMI <--same exact thing but with a different shaped connector

DVI-I == DVI-D + VGA <-- both signal types flowing through the same cable at the same time

DVI-D =! VGA <- completely incompatible and requires ~$300 worth of equipment to translate the signal.

I don't know how many other ways to describe it...  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

EDIT:
Here I'll ignore the WHY and give you a list of what can and can't be done (combinations of these cannot be used, it's a cut and dry outputdevice to input device.)

Source device | Receiving device

VGA to DVI-I <- YES $5 adapter
VGA to DVI-D <- NO $300 converter
VGA to HDMI <- NO $300 converter <--- this is what you're trying to do

DVI-I to VGA <- YES $5 adapter
DVI-I to DVI-D <- YES $5 adapter
DVI-I to HDMI <- YES $5 adapter

DVI-D to VGA <- NO $300 converter
DVI-D to DVI-I <- YES $5 adapter
DVI-D to HDMI <- YES $5 adapter

HDMI to VGA <- NO $300 converter
HDMI to DVI-I <- YES $5 adapter
HDMI to DVI-D <- YES $5 adapter

I'm not seeing why you wouldn't just use component cables.  They are capable of delivering the highest quality video that either the xbox or xbox 360 can put out.  If that tv has all the inputs you are talking about I'm sure it has component...

*sigh* so very true...

despite the fact that VGA is theoretically superior to component, the Xbox 360 VGA capabilities have proven lackluster at best in comparison to component video output.

It's obviously been a while since the last post on this topic But just was going o say that now the Xbox 360 Elite has an HDMI port on it. And so will the Halo 3 limited edition Xbox 360 for a smaller price and only 20GB hard drive. I believe about 399$ just $50 more then the standard package that comes with a hard drive. I hear ya though, cause I want to buy an Apple 23" cinema display and plug that sucker up to my 360. pop.gif

As said before, you can use an hdmi to dvi-d adapter to display your image through a dvi-d input on your monitor.

As for the apple displays, i think they are all powered through the dvi port, so they only work with computers that have special video cards that support it. Thats how mine is at least.
