There has been some chatter recently about the LED DLP HDTVs.  Audioholics posted an article discussing the Akai, Sanyo, and Samsung offerings soon to be released to the public.

Wow, nice article. True 1080p resolution, faster warm up times, better color saturation, no bulb replacements and no rainbow effects.

The only concern I have with running LED's at 20,000 hours is that they loose almost 1/2 the brightness over their lifetimes. In addition different color LED's loose brightness at different rates, resulting in similar color shifting problems that plasma sets have.

Update: I just checked the lumileds website and they have the brightness loss at only about 30% over the lifetime of the LED.

That is an interesting article.  However, I would be interested to know how they got rid of the color wheel (and remained with a one chip set).  I don't know how they selectively choose which color goes to which pixel, and it seems this would be impossible.  The only way I can see of doing this is displaying only one color from the LEDs at a time, which would remove the color wheel but still have the problem of rainbow effect.  If anyone knows or has an idea, it would be awesome to hear their explanation.

All they are doing is switching to 3 dedicated LED color lamps, 1 blue, 1 green and 1 red. The chipset is what allows certain light to be reflected to the screen or not. The older color wheel technology meant it was difficult to cycle the color fast enough to eliminate the rainbow effect. With LED's it is possible to cycle the lamps while being synchronized, meaning the 3 colors are displayed closer together in terms of time. This means better dark colors and less perceived rainbow effect, although theoretically it doesn't eliminate the effect.
