720p Or 1080i?
« on: January 09, 2006, 09:51:00 PM »

I have a 50 inch plasma with a native res of 1366 x 768.  The dashboard looks better at 1080i, but I think most games are 720p, correct?  I'm thinking of setting it back down to 720p for better game performance, or is that dumb?

you plasma is native 720p so it would be best to leave the xbox at 720p. no conversion. if you set the xbox to 1080i your tv just converts that to 720p anyways smile.gif

this actually dephend on the transcoder built in the TV it self. i have seen many TVs of same size of same resolution (1280x768 and 1366x768), on some model, like samsong, it's better at 720p, while like some Sony/LG 1080i looks better (i have Sony KLV bravia model).

edit: even if your TV is native 1280x720 you will not get full native resolution (720p) via component cable to the tv's pixels, only way is via VGA/DVI/HDMI.

If you select 1080i, only the dashboard is 1080i.  Once you boot up a game it changes to 720p.  (I think?)

No it stays at 1080i.

So the advantage of 720p would be the higher framrates right?

To be honest I think 1080i looks sharper, espically when compairing football broadcasts CBS (1080i) to ESPN (720p).

Use whatever setting looks best to you. Your set is changing the input signal no matter which way you go so dont worry about it.  Some do a better job than others at this. If 1080i looks sharper to you and your games run smoothly then thats the way to go for you.
