Using My Kvm And M$ Vga Cables
« on: January 09, 2006, 08:13:00 PM »

With my XBox1 and PC, I was able to power up the PC, switch over to XBOX,
then power down my PC, and while the PC was powering down, switch the video back to my xbox.
Basically, so I could play without the PC turned on.. and it worked great.. every time.

Now, I basically replaced my XBOX1 w/my 360, and when I go to shut the PC down, as soon as
the video click off of the PC, I lose my 360 video as well... sad.gif

What else can I do to keep the video going, but would like to turn the PC off.....?

I tried unplugging the KVM from the PC while it was still turned on... just to see if I'd lose
my 360 video... but the 360 stayed on and kept playing.

Then, I hit the power button on the front of my PC to shut down Windows while the 360 was playing...
and POOF, the 360's video went off when the Power died to the PC...

So, something in the Mouse or Keyboard connections caused my 360 to go down....

any ideas?
(or did I confuse you all?) heheh

I know alot of KVM switches use the 5v from the keyboard to power the switch.

What kind of KVM switch is it? I have one, but it uses a manual switch on it which I use for my DVD player and digital STB. I don't have any trouble with it because it doesn't need power. I can't understand why you didn't have any problems with the Xbox, but now you do with the 360.

Yeah.. I think its a belkin, but I'm not home right now to verify.
It has no 'manual' toggle switch on it.

I wouldnt mind buying one that had a manual switch if they
pass through perfect video quality (like what I have) and is cheap.

If anyone has any ideas how to modify this thing (or keyboard ports)
to make it think that it has power.. I'd gladly try something as well... smile.gif

I hate to keep my PC  AND  360 on together, as the room gets pretty noisy...

Does anyone here use one of those 'old school'
VGA Switchboxes ?

I'm thinking of trying this... unless it degrades my video quality.

Nah... those probably are crap.  (i feel like I'm talking to myself)

I think maybe I need to find one that is AC Powered instead of being
powered by something off the PC....

Like a rack-mount KVM... smile.gif

So  IPB Image isn't a bad option?  Does it degrade picture quality?  Is it acceptable?  It's pretty cheap.

Okay... I just ordered one of these things off ebay
($15 shipped)
We'll see how it works.  I'll let you know when it shows up.

My Belkin KVM that I use now looks perfect... I'll compare this
manual switchbox to that.

It will be great to be able to have my PC powered off while my 360 is playing
on my monitor!  whoohoo!

Yeah, the analog switchbox is doing better for me.

PC looks the same, but both my VDigi's output (which I use for HD component video sources, i.e. xbox & PS2, etc) and my DVDO upscaler (deinterlacer, which I use for all 480i/576i stuff incl. videogames) look noticibly brighter, and clearer. I wouldn't have said there was a problem to begin with, but this is an improvement, if only a slight one.

Is it just me or are those kvm's older then me (and i was born in 81). I think if you use a prehistoric pos like that, you will have crappy video. Why dont you try KTC, they seem to be up with the times. I have one and it works perfect, also I dont have to turn the oven knob when I want to switch inputs(has hot keys). It amazes me that they still sell crap like that.

Not really sure how a KTC varies from a KVM, but I'm guessing you still need power from a source
to keep either video going, and an active keyboard to swtich between the two (like a KVM)

I want a manual switch that is completely non powered by either device (so you can have either
device powered OFF at any time) and want it cheap and want it to send a clear video picture.

So, if the manual switch works well (which I should find out in a few days time)
I would say that it is the answer I'm looking for

KTC is a brand of KVM switches. The one I have comes with its own power adapter, so it does not need power from the pc.

Edit: also it has a button for manual switching on the actual unit. Check it out for ur self. That one does not come with a power adpter for some reason, but it still has the plug so u can plug one in.  http://www.dealsonic...ckz2popskv.html

Very cool.  I will keep that one in mind if the manual box
works for crap.  $19.99 isn't too bad of a price either (plus shipping sad.gif )

Thanks for the heads up.

Please keep updating this thread with your results.  I'm still not sure which route I am going to take.

GOOD NEWS!
As biosehnsucht stated earlier the manual switchboxes work awesome.
I just got mine and hooked it up.
The only mistake I made is that mine seems to be used already, and
the knob seems to need a little fiddling to get the screen to stop flickering.
But once I get it in the right place... the picture on both the PC and the 360
come through super clear!  (Video doesnt get degraded like when you use
cheap VGA extension cables)
Since the Switchbox is all FEMALE on the back, the monitor and 360 plug directly in.
As far as the PC, I had to swipe a MALE/MALE cable that came with my BENQ Projector.
(You probably will want to make sure you get a high-quality cable for this, so your PC's
picture doesnt look like $hit)

I no longer have to power up the PC to play my 360 thru my KVM.
(And this switchbox requires NO external power for it.. which is great as well)
Actually I have my PC and my XBOX1 now on the 'B' side of the switch thru my old KVM.
So I can switch around between all 3 devices now!  smile.gif
