Xbox 360 Sound
« on: January 02, 2006, 03:33:00 AM »

I got my 360 about a week ago and I have noticed that sometimes while I am playing a game like call of duty 2 the surround sound cuts of for like a second or 2.  The tv still comes trough red and white.  Also it does it alot more in halo 2 when I get into a sound intense fight.  Could the hd pack be faulty or maybe the optical cable. Has anyone else experienced sound problems with the optical out.

I got my XBOX360 conntected via an optical cable ( I am using the HD-component-cable ). No matter what game I play ( tested on Condemned and King Kong ), I got no sound every few seconds for a short peroid of time ( about half a second ).

The optical cable also doesn´t fit very well into the HD-component cable - it´s kind of loose. The optical cable is okay - I use it with my dvd-player and my old xbox.

Don´t know what went wrong.

check the end of the optical cable even one speck of dirt will cause problems. Are you using the official cable or a third party one? ive heard a few bad reports about the 3rd party optical SPDIF outs.

is your surround sound device set to automatically detect the surround sound mode it's receiving?

the 360 during silent periods or scene changes drops the digital surround signal complete, forcing a receiver set to auto detect to reset and re-detect what mode it's in. this can result in the sound disappearing for a second or two.

if your receiver has an indicator telling what mode it's in watch it next time the sound goes out. if you can manually set your receiver to function in Dolby Digital when using the Xbox 360.

I am using the official MS cable.  I thought it was the hd cable so I took it back to best buy and got a new one with replacement plan.  But I guess the cable was good cause it stills does it in halo 2.  So then I went out and bought a high quality optical cable and it still does it.  everything is plugged in right.  So I think it is the xbox 360 or the emulation of a halo2.  I guess I will just wait till it breaks and get a new one from best buy. weird that it only does it in call of duty 2 and halo 2.  DOA4 plays fine so does PDZ.  And my sony receiver is set on auto and I tested it with my old xbox and it is good.

And I thought I was the only one with this problem

I hoticed this mostly on COD2 and Quake 4 .
I have a opcical cable into my reciver , also on AUTO .   Like the rest of you Its only for 2 seconds at the most and its not verry often . Still enough to make me get worried and search the web .

I will check the amp the next time it drops to see if it is auto detecting .
Also it works 100% with the old xbox . same amp and same optical cable .

Looks like its the 360 causing it to auto detect .

Will keep to all posted on my findings

Cheers

Looks like you are right bro ..  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Watched my amp when the sound dropped . it lost connection then setback to Dolby surround .

So the next quwstion is why ?

why do the games do this . cos I called Xbox support and thay said there is no known problems .

Is the console faulty bacause it drops the sound .???

Cheers

I would say that if you bought it from best buy you should also buy the 2 year replacement plan it only 49.99
Also my xbox was made on 2005-12-08 and I got it on 2005-12-22.  And for the quake guy does it do it in the demo or the actual game?  Because I downloaded the demo and plays perfect without the sound cut off.

No man , just the full game   , same as COD 2 .

I re-seated the optical cable at the back of my amp last night , so far it looks like it is behaving .

Still to early to say that its now working 100 %

I have a gut feeling that the xbox is ok , I say this because Its only some games that have this problem .
Cheers all

Remember with your optical cable that a small bit of dirt or any kink or even too tight of a bend will impact your signal. It may not fail totally but will cause errors in the data stream which may be causing your drops in sound and the reinitialization to your signal. Make sure the cables are well seated any type of gap will also cause errors and loss in the signal.

Cheers man (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

You may be right .

I took my 360 round to my mates house and used his audio setup .

No drops (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

So , It looks like my amp    or   th eoptical cable / optical switch

Will start fault finding by removing switch , and putting new optical cable from 360 into amp .

Ps  . Thanks to all the help on this matter (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi, I am having audio problems too, but when even playing just streaming music via my stereo system.  I have the optical audio out from the 360 to my Panasonic stereo receiver (which btw worked fine with the original xbox HD hookup).  But I am only hearing the lows (bass) thru the subwoofer.  I monkeyed w/ the audio settings on the receiver and the best I can do is get the rear speakers sound when trying to stream and play music.  I also have the basic composite audio (L & R) going into the TV along w/ the component HD wires.  wonder if that makes a diff.  it shouldn't. ??  I will check for specs of dirt or hard bends on the fiber optic cord.  anyone know what type of signal the music player sends from the 360?  Dolby Digital Pro Logic II?

i had a cutout problem with my surrond sound as well
i had it set to optical but i still had the problem
what was happening was my unit went into stand by if there was no tos link for more than 2 seconds
i do not know what to do or how to fix this
i do not think there is a way to change the standby timeout
i just switch to coaxial on cames that cut out a lot
