good read except for the part about the viewing angle of DLPs... really that's a problem with Rear projection sets in general...

LCD and CRT rear projection sets have that problem as much as RP DLPs do...

DLP in a front projection setup doesn't have that problem at all with a proper screen nor do LCD and CRT front projectors in a proper setup.

Not to mention LCD viewing angles arn't always spectacular either.

What about people who want to use other gaming machines, watch TV or play DVDs with the 360 on the same display?

Good support for 480i/p signals can be just as important if you want to use it for OTHER things. In my experience most LCDs and Plasmas, while fantastic at displaying in their native resolutions, look like total crap when displaying anything but.

Just some stuff to think about  wink.gif

Good point about the type of DLP.  I was extremely brief cuz this was already a long read.  But about your 480 signals, most HDTV displays have no trouble displaying native 480p because they automatically scale it to 1080i.  1080i is really 960i with some extra lines for information.  As long as your TV's scaled resolution is perfectly divisible by the type of signal your device inputs, you will have no loss.

So, for 720p (xbox 360 games),  1500i would work without loss.  480p dvd's? 1080i does just fine.  Keep in mind that your television automatically upscales any signal to the resolution it natively supports.  So technically, a 480p dvd playing playing a 480p dvd on my 1500i display wouldn't look as good had my display been 1080i.  But my xbox360 games, and ABC, CBS in HD would look better because they broadcast in 720p.

Hugoboss, your TV is fine.  Just make sure you have the proper settings for your xbox360 and you will have a nice picture.  smile.gif

Nice read and lots of good information in here. One question though. I was originally thinking about getting an HDTV but honestly I was only going to use it for games, movies and football on the weekends. So I wanted to know what projector would you recommend for about $1500. It must do 720p native and have a variety of component hookups

Thanks in advance

I hope this helps at least one person looking to get a new TV for their xbox 360.

Basically CRT HDTV displays are still the highest quality display over any other format (DLP, Plasma, LCD, LCoS).  However in the xbox 360's case, all games natively support 720p but unfortunately CRT televisions do not support 720p native.  Instead they upscale everything to 1080i in which loss can occur.  So if you want to display games in their native resolution, going to Plasma or LCD is the way to go.

Hope this helps someone.

i have the samsung TX-R2678WH .

and I must point out that this tv offers native 720p.  This is a great t.v. with excellant picture quality imo.  And unlike most CRT's.  THIS  DOES OFFER NATIVE 720p. pop.gifTV link here

Amazing picture quality and man oh man is the xbox beautiful on it.  Once I get my 360 in a month or so, It will have those xbox 360 games showing all their beauty -  And for $550 on clearance at best buy now and maybe less online, you can't go wrong. PICK ONE UP!!

Plus, oh how 720p looks and imo better than 1080i,  biggrin.gif , but I won't jump on the wagon to start the argument tongue.gif

Well, I can tell you, as I own this tv, it does accept and output in 720p.  Xbox media center for example has a utility that lets you switch resolutions in dash and also to watch dvds in.  it offers a range of resolution options.  If my tv wont  output a 720p signal, it sure woudnt display as 720p ( which it does ) and looks different than 1080i both in dash menu and viewing movies.  So, again, this tv does display 720p.  If there is any chance I am wrong, please show me proof, cause until then Its quite obvious to me through both viewing and selecting - that 720p is displayed and displayed great! biggrin.gif

another link for specs etc. ( look under tech specs and its even says 720p smile.gif

well after searching and reading more on this forum:

avsforum.com

I think I stand corrected and although I am still kinda confused by why samsung lists the tv as having 720p in the first place if it just upconverts to 1080i? huh.gif  blink.gif  Anyhoo, the image is still ow so sweet, and btw until today I never realized on hdtvs you can go into a system hidden menu and fine adjust all the settings.  wow what a difference it makes, you need to try it!!  Also try getting a copy of "The Avia Guide to Home Theatre"  I just ordered it and from what I hear makes a night and day difference with your HDTV setup!

SO thanks to all who replied and sorry If I came across all knowing, I learned somthing from reading! pop.gif  biggrin.gif

I just bought the Vizio L37 37" LCD HDTV from Costco, and it looks amazing!!!!! This TV isperfect. 37" is the perfect size for my bedroom. The quality of the display isjawdropping IMO. Worth looking into if you want a lot of bang for your buck. I guess Vizio is a new, up and coming company that has been winning industry awards. Check out their web site. Plus it has a great warranty. It also has a low response time of 8ms, so things never get blurry. Vizio L37 specs
