5.  The new 1080p sets will accept a 1080p signal when they become available.

I just bought a 1080P set...a 46" Samsung LCD. I also bought a 1080P upscaling DVD player. Sadly I realized that even though the TV states in it's specs that it accepts a 1080P signal through it's component inputs it will only accept 1080i. I was assuming the HDMI would also accept the 1080P signal but it does not. I haven't been able to try it with the VGA or DVI ports. The specs say something along the lines of they might not be correct...which seems pretty crappy that they can't even get there own specs correct in there own manual.

The TV does upscale everything to 1080P, so now...it not accepting a 1080P signal isn't bad, but when more devices that do pump out 1080P become available it will be pretty crappy that it's can't accept the signal, but it can make it on it's own.

I had myself convinced that my TV would probably get a better picture converting 1080i to 1080p than it would converting 720p to 1080p. I was speculating that an i to p jump would be smaller than a 720 to 1080 jump. This point was completely thrown out the door when I saw how sweet the 360s VGA output was. I would LOVE IT if the 360 supported 1920 x 1080 in VGA mode...but alas I have to stick with 1280 x 1024 :-)

The 360 is easily the best looking thing that I have seen on my TV. An upscaled DVD doesn't even come close to the 360s HD glory.

... remember regardless if the image your tv gets is interlaced or not its just as hard to process 1080i as 1080p, just like theres no preformence loss on 480i to 480p

Not true, if i understand you correctly.

Without going into all the details. With two identical resolutions, one being interlace and the other progressive, the progressive one will require more system resources then interlace.  480p taxes a system more then 480i, just as 1080p would over 1080i.

Also: I believe that, although strange, 1080p (like 480i and 1080i) is only 30fps, not 60fps like 480p and 720p.

My TV does 1080P at 60fps. Samsung LT-P468W 46" LCD...so I'm guessin' your mistaken. 1080P is known as "The Best of Both Worlds" as far as the 720P vs 1080I battle goes.

TheVirus: 1280x1024, I believe, is equal to 1080i.  Correct me if i'm wrong.

Wrong.

1080i = 1920x1080, but at 30fps rather than 60fps. Basically the "i" means it displays half the image (1920x540) every 60th of a second. It displays the odd lines, then the even lines, then the odd lines, over and over to complete the picture, which means that every 30th of a second it displays a complete picture to get 30fps. The "p" resolutions display the entire image every 60th of a second, which means it displays the image at 60fps.

1280x1024 is a resolution that computers use. Its not 16:9 at all (which all Hi-Def resolutions are 16:9 - aka widescreen). Infact its far from being 16:9, and is considered 4:3 (even though its not really 4:3, but its very close).

its capable of outputting it, but its not an official HD resolution, remember regardless if the image your tv gets is interlaced or not its just as hard to process 1080i as 1080p, just like theres no preformence loss on 480i to 480p

1080p is an official HDTV resolution. Check out the "ATSC" article on wikipedia. Both 1080p30 and 1080p24 are supported (1080p24 is perfect for film, think HD-DVD addon)
