Does Xbox 360 Support 1080p?
« on: November 25, 2005, 04:09:00 PM »

Whenever I  was playing around with my xbox 360 in the dashboard. I noticed that there was a option to select 480p, 720p, and 1080p. Which one should I select? My TV supported all three. As of right now, I selected 720p, if I change to 1080p, isit going to look better than 720p? Thanks for answering.

I am 90% sure that it does not support 1080p.

The options are 420p, 720p, and 1080i, not 1080p

It is 1080i as it is interlaced. It seems to be subjective. Try them out and decide which you like better.

its capable of outputting it, but its not an official HD resolution, remember regardless if the image your tv gets is interlaced or not its just as hard to process 1080i as 1080p, just like theres no preformence loss on 480i to 480p

Hey guys, I don't have enough money for one of those tvs for 2 grand (I barely have enough for a 360, lol), but I do have a 19 inch dell monitor, it is 1280x1024 native resolution i believe. where does this stand in terms the hd standards? will it be as good as those high def tv's in terms of resolution? and if and when I get a 360, how the hell do i hook it up to my monitor? I know it has dvi input, vga input, but not a s-video. Thanks for the help.

First of all, the 360 DOES NOT support 1080p.  It'll only go to 1080i.  The reason why is because it's brand new.  It's not even a official resolution yet.  M$ stated along time ago that they would not support 1080p.  If they don't support HDMI output yet, what makes you thing that they support 1080p?

TheVirus: 1280x1024, I believe, is equal to 1080i.  Correct me if i'm wrong.

The PS3 will supposedly support 1080p.

For gaming, the significant advantage of 1080p and 720p is that they can run at a full 60fps.  1080i is only 30fps.

There is not transmission standard for 1080p and probably never will.  1080p monitors simply deinterlace 1080i signals.

FYI, tube sets are the only ones that display interlaced signals.  Everything else (plasma, lcd, and DLP) uses progressive signals. So tube sets are designed to display 1080i and converts all other signals to that display format.  Up until now all progressive sets were designed for 720p and all other signals are converted to 720p.  However, a bunch of misinformed consumers thought that 1080i was better than 720p (which it isnt b/c only 540 lines are drawn in each frame). They did not understand that only interlaced sets did 1080, so the industry decided to cash in on such morons.  They started making 1080p sets.  However, there is no such thing as a 1080p signal.  So the 1080p sets would not even be able to accept a 1080p signal.  Also, no devices are even capable of outputting a 1080p signal.

As everyone else said, the creators did not intend the 360 to use 1080p, only 1080i.  I believe using 1080i will prove useless in the long run, though because 720p is techincally better than 1080i.  As stated earlier, the Playstat... ah nvmd, no use in goin there  rolleyes.gif

I'm sorry but I have to correct you.

There are a few LCDs screens that support 1080P native through DVI and more coming.

Yes there is no transmission standard for HDTV at 1080P but PC can output this quite easily.

The xbox probably could aswell given the graphic cards origins, wether MS wanted to add the capability and support a non standardised format is another story.

1080i fed natively on a tube HDTV looks better than 90% of all other technologies in 720P

Ask any professional Graphics person which they prefer based on image alone and they will tell you CRT.

You are without a doubt the misinformed consumer and you are wrong on a majority of points.  I've been working in post-prodcution for 12 years.

1.  1080i provides nearly double the spatial quality of 720p.  Spatial quality (space) is the resolution of a single frame.  The fact that it is interlaced means nothing in this regard.  Because it's interlaced, the temporal quality (time) is what suffers.  1080i is only half the temporal quality of what 720p and 1080p is capable of.  So 1080i cannot display anything higher that 30fps, while 720p and 1080p sets can display 60fps.

2.  The advantages in temporal quality you get from a 720p signal is totally non-existent if the source material was recorded at only 30fps or less.  So for exampe, every single motion picture shot on 24fps film will not see the benefits that 720p sets can achieve.  Thus, 1080i or 1080p is vastly superior for watching movies because you get the full frame rate anyways, and you get a much higher resolution.  720p's advantage only exists if the source material is higher than 30fps (games, or live sporting events shot on 720p equipment).

3.  A 1080p television set gives you the best of both worlds.  You can view upscaled 720p matieral at a full 60fps, (something you cannot do on a 1080i CRT set).  And you can watch 1080i material in it's full resolution (something you cannot do on a 720p DLP/LCD/Plasma set).

4.  1080p @ 24fps (technically called 1080Psf) has always been around and almost every single professional HD device supports it.  1080p @ 60fps is what these new sets use.

5.  The new 1080p sets will accept a 1080p signal when they become available.

6.  While there may not be devices that ouptut 1080p@60fps at this very second, next year there will be millions.  HD-DVD and BluRay players will be capable of 1080p.  Sattellite and cable providers may support it as well.  Sony's PS3 will support it, and if they wanted to, MS could have supported it with the Xbox 360.

Again, having 60fps for 1080 resolution is pointless for movies.  But for gaming there is a huge advantage.  So if the guy at Best Buy told you that 1080p sets are just some pointless gimmick simply because all digital displays are progressive scan, I would suggest getting your information from a better source.
