Hi all.

What i'm interested is, that will i notice with my regular 32" tv when playing example new morrowind that "whoa, this truly is nextgen graphics" so that the improvement to the old xbox visually is high. Or do i need HTDV or good VGA monitor to point that fact out or just make the good even better. Thats what i would like to know...
TV is ok as normal tv but my monitor is really dim and seems to be manufactured back in '94 =)

I give up, I still can't figure out how it will be running on a PC monitor at 1280x1024... it's more pixels than 720p

I believe the monitor will adjust for it and sort of stretch it to fit, but you will not realy notice it.

What i DON'T get is why you can buy a real good lcd screen that displays hi res vga(1600x1200) for around 300-400$ for 19" but to get a LOW res(HDTV) lcd screen it costs you 2-3 times more and the quality is lower.

Anyone that has used there higher quality PC monitor to display movies or play games knows there is nothing in the tv market that compares. Why is that? Don't you think the technology is there, they have just been milking the consumers to get as much as they can! Lets give them svideo in this year and then udate it to composite next year and then 2-3 years we start rumors of a "High def" tv that displays 720x480, charge them 4-5 times what it costs and then make it obsolete with a new "True High Def" tv that does 1080 but only interlaced and then when everyone buys that we set the standard at 720P so they all have to buy new sets to enjoy it!

WTF Why not build them like PC monitors, VGA has been around for along time and basicly its the same concept as composit. So why so long till they updated it.

And why when you hook your pc up to your High def tv it still looks like crap. It should be compatible with any video input. With the way things are going there will become less and less seperation between pc and home theater. So why not build one product that excepts vga, composite and is capable of displaying all native resolutions. Why? because then they wouldn't have people buying new tvs because the one they have is not compatible.

OK Im done. Still a little pissed about the 720P thing lol

1280x720 is a 16:9 display (widescreen) and 1280x1024 is a 4x3 display (standard)

letterboxing is used to "put black bars" on the top and bottom of the image.

if you run your 360 in 1280x1024 letterboxed, you will have a "16:9 1280x720" image

hope that helps?

How exactly would you hook up the 360 to a monitor using that VGA cable? To me it looks like there are pins on the end of it, and there are also pins on my monitor's connector. Unless there is some male to female converter you can get for VGA connectors? I have a decent LCD monitor, and hooking 360 up to that would look way better than anything on my crappy TV, even if it is a little smaller.

Thanks, that's what I was insinuating above, but someone was saying it would run fullscreen, which confused the hell out of me.

Thanks again smile.gif

This info from Gamespot might help smile.gif

The system allows you to set your display resolution and aspect ratio depending on the type of video cables you use. VGA cables will give you six different resolution options: 640x480, 848x480, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768. Component cables will give you 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolution choices. Games are actually rendered internally at 720p, and the ATI video engine scales the video up or down to the desired resolution.

There is actually a "gender changer" for VGA cables, if you monitor cable is hardwired into the back of your monitor you can use the adapter.

You're right it is more pixels than 1280 x 720, but the 360 can upscale it's native 720p signal to 1080i which is 1920x1080, actually more pixels than 1280 x 1024. I also believe that since the 360 can upscale like this that the 1280 x 1024 image will not be letter boxed.

The only way to upscale 1280x720 to 1280x1024 fullscreen without letterboxing is to do the following horrible thing:
1280x720 -chop-> 960x720 -scale-> 1280x1024

My LCD monitor is at 1280x1024 and has a mandatory feature to scale any other resolution to fit. So if I tried to send it a 1280x720 image, it would stretch the image vertically to fit 1280x1024. I have an ATI 9600xt card and it has an options for letterbox resolutions. So with that option, I can send a 1280x720 image to my LCD and the LCD thinks it's a 1280x1024 image. So I have black bars on top and bottom and no horrible stretching. Given that the GPU in the xbox360 is made by ATI, I hope they gave it letterbox options as well.

yes, there would be black lines. The ATI GPU has the ability to downscale and upscale the resolution without a real loss of quality (if any).

Unfortunatly, it cant get standard monitor resolutions - hence the black lines.

If I do this i'll be using one of these 2:

Joytech ones a bit cheaper.

I think some of these options were added by a patch that is dowloaded from LIVE. I'm not really sure when it was downloaded, but I have all of the VGA resolutions showing on mine.

Well, 1280x1024 isn't 4:3 ratio like someone said, is 5:4 ratio.
Now let me tell you guys whats happening to me:
I bought the VGA xbox360 cable to connect the 360 to my 19" Samsung 913N LCD, as i can't afford a HDTV right now.
But some weird shit is happening:
With exclusion of 640x480 and 1024x768, every other resolution that i choose gets upscaled to the full screen of the monitor!
With 1024x768 i get a correct ratio, with black bars on top and bottom of the screen, but if i choose 1280x1024 is stretches the image once a race starts (i only have PGR3).
Weird is that in the menus of the game the ratio is ok, it just stretches once i go into a race.
I would really like to use 1280x1024, as it is the native resolution of my LCD and is more HD than 1024x768 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Anybody knows what's going on?

Thanks
