Dolby Surrounds the Xbox 360-- Posted by XanTium on November 17 12:34 EST
From the press release:

Dolby Laboratories announced today that the new Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will support Dolby Digital surround sound for both games and movies. This next-generation game console includes both interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for game play, as well as Dolby Digital decoding for video playback.

For game play, the Xbox 360 features interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, allowing next-generation games on this platform to deliver a highly realistic sound field that places gamers in the middle of the action. Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound gives gamers a competitive advantage by allowing them to hear enemies that may not be visible on the screen.

Sure it is different.

Name some games that feature IN GAME DD 5.1. While many games support cut-scenes and video in DD, the gameplay does not.

I believe you're thinking of the PS2 here. IIRC, the majority of Xbox games supported Dolby Digital 5.1 in-game.

This is no different than the current Xbox... you could play DVD's with DD5.1 support and most games had 5.1 support.  Not sure why they called this breaking news.

This "news item" instantly made me vote for "Screw general news, just post 'scene' news" on the current poll...

I think its a big deal cause its built into the hardware and not done from a software level. Those wanting dts though(or any other input for that matter) will get it at a software level. Name any other onsoles that has dolby 5.1 built in thats out now. It makes the sound a whole lot better. Sure most xbox games supported it but not all because it wasnt supported out of the box and ppl griped about this back then. now they have nothing to gripe about.

actually alot of the current xbox games (not all) dont have 5.1 in the cut scenes just in gameplay.

They already said they were going to support 6.1 and 7.1 channel surround.  And some games will support DTS and EX and above.

One game for the xbox I just noticed...Path of Neo is THX certified and it sounds great.

For people that have never heard games on digital surround, there is a major difference.
In Halo 2 on live I can hear people coming up a walkway behind me, with radar off.  There is actually an extra zippy sound to sniper bullets flying by that you can never hear on analog stereo...swear to god.
It is just getting to the point where a bigger group of consumers have a digital setup.
You must realize that just having surround and a dolby reciever doesn't make the audio digital.  You need the optical or coax coming from the xbox to the reciever to get the real deal.  And the difference...is VERY noticable...say from phantom surround or Pro Logic.
I bet the first Star Wars game for the 360 will support DTS or ES at the software level.  badass!
