So..... do you think it would be worth getting a DVI cable if they ever make it for my TV?  Or do you think the quality of DVI over component would hardly be noticeable?

Not a chance they'll sell a 10' HDMI cable for $20. Something is definately wrong about that listing.

There's nothing special about an HDMI cable that should make it cost $40+

it's a 20 wire cable with a HDMI shaped plug at the end... nothing special about it... except it says HDMI!!! wow that should drive the cost up!

this particular cable is made by Pelican, which makes LOTS of decent quality low cost AV products... heck I bought a Component Video (Color-stream) switch box for $25 from Best Buy, it even came with a set of component video AND S-Video cables... I've also purchased at set of Pelican Component video cables for the PS2 for $10 at Best Buy.

I have no doubt they're completely capable of selling a 360 HDMI cable for $20...

Just because you're accustom to getting ripped off doesn't mean something can't be priced low.

The reason that the pricing of cables goes thru the roof on some brands is the amount of electromagnetic sheilding they put around the wiring.  Sure, all cables are the same basic structure, but the law of induction says "any wire in a moving magnetic field will induce a current"... which is bad for the integrity of the signal.  So, if you want to buy a $20 cable, hop to it.  But the $40+ cables tend to have significantly more shielding.  Whether the name brand stuck on the side is worth more than $40 to you is up to you.  Just FYI.

As far as I know the main difference is that HDMI carries the audio, just like a SCART connector does, where as a DVI cable just carries the picture so if you get a DVI adapter and use the SPDIF on the HDMI cable for audio (i expect M$ will do the same as with the component) then it will work fine.

Well lucky me I guess.  My Pioneer VSX reciever has HDMI switching AND component switching. My Phillips HDTV has 1 HDMI input.  And luckily my cable provider's Digital reciever's have HDMI instead of DVI and Optical!!!  I lucked out a bit I think. I have had my reciever for 3 month's, have been waiting on word about HDMI.  I was very excited to hear the pinouts have been determined, when I read the news page this morning.  I already have the cable hooked up through HDMI (BADASS).  I think one of the first mods I attemt will be a HDMI output plug similar to the coax mods of the xbox.  And I know someone is going to say..."If you can afford a 1000 dollar reciever, why can't you buy a 20 dollar cord??"
To which I say..."Where's the fun in that, this is xbox-scene dammit!!"

And for all of you who haven't experienced HDMI.  The difference...IS...noticable, in both video and sound.  Almost to the degree of comparing Composite (Red, White, Yellow) to Component (Red, Blue, Green+audio)

I will be keeping my eye on this forum for breakthrough's in modded AV out.

I do have a quick off topic question though.  Will the 360 upscale DVD to 720p, 1080i?
I am sure this is covered somewhere.  Just checking.

I don't understand why everyone wants HDMI.  I have HDMI on my tv and am getting an adapter to change to DVI because from what I understand they have the same video quality.  But you can get DVI splitter's very cheap for like 8 bucks.  And as far as audio inside the HDMI, why would anyone want this unless they have a receiver that has abunch of HDMI inputs in it.  I would rather have the video go straight to the tv and audio straight to my receiver.
