720p Vs. 1080i
« on: October 27, 2005, 08:31:00 PM »

I was wondering which of those 2 (720p or 1080i) is better.  Also, does anybody have some pics of the same picture in the 2 different formats.

if this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it.

Read the faqs.

Second of all, how can we give you pictures of the different resolutions? A picture of 1080i wouldn't be possible since your monitor is running in progressive.

Do yourself a favor and do some research (not a troll response, a constructive one). Go and google in whatever you need to know. That's what I did, and I learned a helluva lot (plus with the help of the helpful fellas here).

My point in asking is I have not bought the tv yet.  If I go with CRT, I will get 1080i.  But if I go with lcd, I will get 720p.  Hence my asking.

it totally depends on how you define "better"

In most cases it comes down to the quality of the display rather than the resolution you're displaying. the differences between a CRT and an LCD have a much more dramatic effect on the picture quality outside of the resolutions they support. in terms of refresh rates, response time, scaling lag, natural aliasing/anti-aliasing, color quality, black levels, contrast ratios, etc.

^all of those factors have a much higher effect on how good the picture looks then whether or not the display does 1080i or 720p.

Though if you're that hung up on resolution AFAIK CRTs are the only display type that can natively support both (much like a PC CRT Monitor)

Thanks for all the help.  I think I got my answer.  I think I'm gonna stay with the CRT as I still think they look the sharpest.

well it's 1280x720 resolution VS 1920x1080 so it's quite a bit higher in resolution.

not true. more like 1920x540x2 which still equals 1920x1080. there is no illusion of lines that are not there. the lines are there they are just flashed alternately so fast it's not even noticable to the casual watcher. 1080i and 720p are both great looking pictures with their own strengths.
