Vga V. Composite Video
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:17:00 AM »

Pros and Cons of one side against the other one?? I've had a nice LCD TV for a while which also serves as my computer Monitor, But the VGA input picture is MUCH better then the composite picture, will the 360 VGA adaptor give me good quality? Also Will the adaptor be available at launch?? Thanks - Nate

I'm going with the VGA, because I don't have a TV.  I don't like 'em.  I think you're right about it looking MUCH better too.

Do you mean component?  Composit is only one step above coax.

The VGA cable is pointless. From what I have read, the VGA cable will output the same resolutions as the component cable (ie 480p, 720p, 1080i).

Unless the 90% of people, like myself, who will be purchasing the vga cable solely to play on a computer monitor.

Here's a thing to consider when thinking of choosing between component or vga cable. Many LCD and Plasma TV's treat component input like they treat most "normal av" inputs, ie antenna, scart, rca and s-video.

As you might know normal tv image contains moving lines and other material on the outer edges of the image, which isn't meant to be viewed on tv set. It can be seen on TV card in PC if the overscan is toggled off, but on tv 10% of the actual image is hidden behind the edges of the screen. This doesn't pose a problem with normal TV signal - and is actually desirable - but it's very much undesirable with computer and game graphics.

Your LCD TV might have a resolution of 1366x768. With 10% overscan you get about 1230x690 pixels shown on screen and then interpolated to fit the screen. VGA (or DVI) inputs in TV's never overscan any material (generally), so you get an image with less information lost and more crisp output.

This naturally depends on how your TV handles component input, and if the overscan can be switched off. VGA is still a safer bet.

/me bangs head against wall...

What the hell happened here? This thread started with a redundant question that could have been answered by simply reading the stickies, and what followed was a string of pure uneducated guessing and arguments, most of which again could have been corrected by simply reading the stickies...

To set the record straight:

1. Yes the VGA cable will be available at launch
2. No it will NOT come with the premium bundle (the premium bundles comes with a combo cable that includes component and composite)
3. Yes VGA is better than component as per the pecking order below

Modulated RF < Composite < S-Video (S-VHS SCART) < Component < RGB (RGB SCART) < VGA (DVI-A) < HDMI (DVI-D)

As you can see, next to the digital format (HDMI or DVI-D) VGA is the best quality signal you can get, which is 2 notches above Component. Component actually has more in common with S-Video then it does with VGA.

4. The VGA cable will support ACTUAL VGA RESOLUTIONS, it will support 480p, and 720p, but it will also support 1024x768 and other VGA resolutions between 640x480 and 1920x1080.

Thread closed for repetitive questions and stupidity....  rolleyes.gif
