Which HDTV/Monitor Should I buy?
« Reply #105 on: October 21, 2005, 10:08:00 PM »

well i have a post in the 360 forum cause i didnt see this thread so just ignore that one, since this is a different tv anyway.

well i have read through all 275 replies in this thread and learned a great deal about the whole hdtv and the 360 specs and everything but i want some input from some of you guys.

i heard great things about the sanyos at wal-mart so i started lookin at those and found this sanyo 23in lcd but it didnt have a whole lot of the specs (walmart never does)

so i took the whole 2 minutes to go to the sanyo site and found it here and by everything i read there, it sounds perfect.

it has 1280 x 720 pixels (WXGA), not sure what the WXGA is but i think the 1280 x 720 is what is perfect for the 360. and it is nativly 720p (it says it converts all signals to 720p so my guess would be that thats its native resolution). it has a 16x9 aspect ratio, and theres a bunch of other stuff like the contrast ratio, if anybody would explain that to me it would be helpful in the long run i guess. it has all kinds of inputs and everything and its in my price range about the max actually. i know $600 but im 15 and have no job, but maybe one soon. 23in is good, i have a 27in in my room but im never in my room, except when i sleep, every other hour of the day besides school im at my computer desk which has a 19in sylvania from like 5 or 6 years ago, so this would be a major upgrade. before anybody asks the 27in in my room is SDTV. and what about like 5.1 audio for this tv, not sure with the sound thing, but i learned a lot about the video.  also this tv will be mainly used for gaming, sometimes cable, but not like a cable box (hd stuff) just the cable that comes in from the street, its better then broadcast but not better then having a box, not sure what its called. it says somethin about a required set-top box for hd signals but thats just for tv right. i know its a lot of questions and stuff but your opinons would be greatly appreciated, and if anymore info is needed just ask, but i think i covered everything.

Since you have no job and no money, I suggest you take it slowly. I'm 16 and CURRENTLY have no job (had one a while ago). I have 300$-ish from my birthday and the money I got from my job which I didn't put into school savings. My brother has a bit more than me since he returned his ps2 at costco a month ago and got the 400$ back. Me and him are splitting the costs for the 360.

I will have no money after that, except for 150$ credit at ebgames and whatever I get when christmas comes around the corner. I'm looking for a job now, but that doesn't matter right now.

I will get the VGA adapter and play on my 15" monitor in my room. It does 1280x1024 (don't ask me how a 15" crt monitor does 1280x1024), so I can play Xbox 360 in 720p withnthe vga hookups.

I'm not gonna waste all my money on a bigger screen right now because, first of all, I'm only fugging 16. I'm not gonna go spend loads on surround sound because I'm fugging 16. I'm not gonna sacrafice everything else money can buy (school, gifts, games, trips to the movies, etc) to get a 'better' gaming experience. I know my limits as of now and I'm not gonna pretend I'm a 25-35 year old man with money to spare. Sure, many of the guys around us have monster HomeTheatre setups, but they are older than us and have a job etc. We can't feel like crap for having a crappy setup compared to them - we should have a crappy setup compared to them.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Someday you will get all that HT goodness, but right now we just can't afford it. No one expects us to have the bells and whistles, and you shouldn't either. If you did have the cash to spare, then I'd say go for it, but since you obviously don't, just wait it out and enjoy the next gen the best you can. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

well i have like 330 from my birthday, and im plannin on trading in my ps2 and gamecube and some of my older systems, since the most recent one i touched was my ps2 a year ago when san andreas came out. im owed some allownace too and i think you can get like 70 for a ps2 not sure how much for a gc though. and i have a fair share of games for the ps2 so i think i can get about 500 saved up and then maybe a loan from my parents for the rest, and pay them back with money i get for christmas. its not like i was looking at some $3000 plasma or dlp or somethin, just a $600 lcd. and the sound can wait and will probably never be hooked up anyways since that would be two sets of 5.1 speakers on my computer desk, which doesnt have a whole lot of room anyways, enough for that tv and xbox and some computer stuff. so does that seem like a good tv, i have no idea what the WXGA thing is after the resolution, or the contrast ratio and stuff.

i already have a 360 preordered that im getting for christmas so i dont have to worry about buying that, and a couple of games preodered too so all im lookin for is a tv now.

ok well i decided against a tv, i figure ill use my monitor, a 17in gateway, so i went to the specs sheet on the gateway site and i dont think its HD. Here's the spec sheet incase someone wants to prove me wrong

so right there on gateway's mainpage is a new 21in widescreen HD monitor they have. i know a lot of you are going to say you could get a better deal on other sites, but my parents hate ordering things offline, about the only place they have ordered from is gateway so i figure thats my best chance of getting them to order something.

so here is this Monitor it has a component input on it so i dont think i would even have to buy the VGA cable. my question is this, i have a 5.1 sound system hooked to my pc, with a creative sound blaster live ls 5.1 sound card. so how could i go about hooking up my 360's video to that monitor and just switch to that whenever i want to play and then back to pc and so forth. and then hook the audio to the 5.1 speakers i have hooked to my computer. i have no idea how i would do this since there are no audio inputs on the monitor and the ones on my sound card are a 3.5mm headphone jack lookin port. so i know i cant just directly hook them up to the 360, so is this even possible to do, or would i have to play with no sound.

i figure a new monitor will be more useful then a new tv cause i can use it for gaming and for the computer instead of just one, now just to figure out the sound issue.

beerchug.gif I sure as hell wouldn't have known what to do with myself with the system that I have now, when I was your age. You'll get there. My entertainment at my age is my tv, having a kid, I don't get out as much as I used to, so, my huge tv compensates. Enjoy your youth and have some fun away from the tv!!  biggrin.gif

I still personally love crt rear proj. sets. I dunno why....
The picture is just so sharp, blacks and whites are foolproof, and the colors are nice.
Haven't seen many DLP sets Close-up yet, though. We'll see what the next big thing is in a couple of years (if people can stick to one type of display technology for gods sake).

I am thinking about getting the Olevia 26" LT26HVX.  It has 8ms respose time.  Is this good for the xbox360?  Also, does anybody own this tv that can tell me if it is good or not?

Hey. Anybody have any opinions on this monitor? It's a Mitsubishi 55" CRT RPTV. Supposedly it handles 720P natively.

Thanks for your input...

I know you all are getting sick of these topics but I figured I should get your guy's opinions  before I go about buying a new tv. So any ways I'm looking into getting a new TV for my room specifically for Xbox 360. I've heard that CRT is the best so that is what I've been looking for. This is the one I like the best HERE. I know it's under "Standard TV's" but Its really a high def one. Any ways your opinion is greatly appreciated.

yeah that one looks good.

has plenty of connections on the back, so you should have to worry about running out of them.

use component video cables for teh best results.

is a digital video output going to be avilable on the 360?
