Playing Cds In 5.1?
« on: March 19, 2004, 09:00:00 AM »

I have XBMC set to play MP3s and all files on my network or hard drive through all channels on my Dolby Digital receiver, however, when I play an audio CD through the Xbox drive, it only plays in stereo.

Is there a way to make the CD Audio play through all channels like MP3s do?

If you turn on DD/AC3 passthrough and 'output to all speakers' it will play to the rear speakers.  Not sure about the center channel since I don't have one.  Sounds pretty decent too.

btw the passthrough setting won't make any difference as CD audio is 44.1KHz and passthrough requires 48KHz.

Yeah but somehow my reciever still locks onto a Dolby Digital signal when playing mp3's.  I think it upsamples to DD5.1.

You need the "Advanced A/V" pack.  You should be able to find it at any Best Buy.  However be aware there are 2 A/V packs, one contains S-Video out, the other contains Component video out - they both contain a digital optical output.  Just make sure you're getting the right one for you tv.

Default output for digital is to encode to AC3. It'll be 2 channel unless you have output to all speakers on, then it'll be 5.1.

See, thats what I thought too....but as my original post said, if I play an MP3, it decodes into 5.1, but if I play a CD, it plays in 2 channel mode only.  I have the Advanced A/V pack using an optical cable.  I also have the setting to output to all channels turned on, yet CDs still only play in 2 channel.

Is this a bug?

I guess the CD code doesn't support multi-channel.
