I have a Thomson from september 2003 and have never failed me yet. Even capable to read DVD+RW. I bought a old samsung which claims to be the god in reading different medias. Well It could just read my cdr discs nothing more. I only use Datasafe Ritek G04 dye discs and havent got a single problem with my thomson drive with these discs. Sometimes your lucky sometimes your not.

Has done all I needed it to do...reads the games fine and DVD-R great. At some point earlier this year I got an occasional DDE, so I just spent 10 bucks for a new laser and I havent gotten one since (knock on wood).

Got a Thomson in my 2002 dated 1.0 Xbox, and haven't had a problem with it yet. Didn't have a problem with it reading CDRWs (used FujiFilm), but haven't used other media besides Pressed DVDs/CDs/Games and CDRWs.

Had my xbox for over a year with a thompson, works perfectly, reads any dvd media i throw at it and runs cdrw fine. doesnt use cdr but hey i never have any need for them in the xbox anyway, dvds are better.

IMO its better than the Sammys!!!!!!!!!

My v1.0 thomson has been working great for me for 2 years now, and i bought it as a refurb which was made in 2001.  One time I thought it had crapped out on me, but all it needed was the lens to be cleaned.  I guess one thing I should mention is that I play everything off of my hardrive except for movies.  As a side note, I like that it plays almost all types of dvd media, including a dvd full of mp3's.

i got a thomson (Jan. 2002) in my brand new Kasumi Blue xbox, which i was highly disappointed at. modded the xbox and was backing up a game to the HDD when it couldn't read some files...took a thomson (dec. 2001) out another new xbox i had just got and it read the dvd fine during backup. Who knows...all i know is that the sammy i used to have in my old xbox didnt give me any troubles at all and if i had to chance to get another, i would, but not for $80.

I'm just curious.  Besides hawgman, has anybody have one of those 2003 thompsons and have any experiences with those?  I had seen 3 thompsons (all 2001/early 2002) ones and don't have good experiences with them...

Have a dead v1.0 thomson with motor and laser problems, disc's wont eject and get DDE and freezing all the time with it.  Pitched in the bin for a replacement and still contemplating with what one, leaning toward the sammy because of all the hype surrounding them but they're so damn expensive.
