THOMSONS PPL, Do You Have One, Does It Work
« on: September 27, 2004, 10:50:00 PM »

just wondering, since i hate these fucks who say thomson is a paper weight, thomson is a piece of shit, samsung is your god...

my thomson is just as good as my modded 616f... load times and all...
just wanted to see what you guys think... and dont send a bullshit vote if you never had a thommy ok please?

thanks

ps
i have a samsung 616 cause i bought the hype when i first got modded (only paid 35 tho on ebay)... but i have the thomson in the xbox instead.

and if you didnt pay 80 for the sammy, but still got one... go ahead and vote the third... it was only a generalization of what ppl pay for them.

yea, i use ritek g04's exclusively, so i have nothing to worry about, the dvd-r's read in just about any stock xbox hard drive ever made, as long as you dont use the absolute shit ones...

I have a Thomson, and it's always worked perfectly.  It reads DVD-Rs better than the Samsung, and DVD+Rs will also play fine (which the all-powerful Samsung won't read).

Yeah, so it won't read CDRs.  How often do I need to boot a CDR?  I also use Ritek G04s for all my stuff.

I agree with perplexer I have all drives but the thompson read all my dvd+-R and

they load quicker.. I have a samsung 605 that can read DVD+ also..

I think mostly the bad thompsons were the ones with the 2001 dates..

ive had a couple 2002 which were fine and I have a few 2003 that read most anything including cd/rw..

If I need to read a cdr i can read it in my pc and ftp the music or whatever off of it and get it on the box.. really no need for the xbox drive to read cdrs. imo

phillips seem to be the slowest loading in my experience..

does it really bother you that much that other people don't like the Thompson drive?

Maybe you should see someone about filling in the voids in your life so that the opinions of others about your DVD drive aren't so bothersome.

Here is my first suggestions http://www.tworivershospital.com/

nah man, i just think its stupid that half the people who rag on thomsons prolly never owned them.. whats that got to do with a void?
over analyzation on your half in my opinion.
but as i suspected.. so far it seems its just the older ones that had the most problems, and with everything it varies from drive to drove, just like any other brand.

nah the void is the fact that you expressed hatred over a group of people who don't like a particuarl DVD drive.  If life is so simple that this bothers you, then something must be missing.  Something missing = void.   So basically I was saying you need to find other hobbies if this really bothers you.

On a side note my original Xbox drive (version 1.0) was a Thompson drive and it's inablity to read various media made it crappy.  My neighbors ability to drop my xbox made it broken.  My new Xbox has a Samsung and it does a much better job.

I had a 2001 tommy and it suck ass, so I tried a pot tweak and I fucked it up by shorting out the pcb when I set it on the metal shielding.  To replace it I bought a 2003 sammy.  I hope that isn't shit too.

My friend got his Xbox for Christmas of 03. Sometime in May or June of 04, I borrowed his Xbox because he was going on vacation and he wanted me to look after it. How could I say no? tongue.gif (this is before I got my Xbox).

So I borrowed it, rented Ninja Gaiden, and I found that while they weren't extremely common, I would get DDE's from his Thomson drive. To this day, he still has the occasional DDE (I UDE'd his Xbox today using Splinter Cell and it gave us DDE when I first put the disc in), and it's obviously not going to get any better. I know two of my friends  who have Samsungs (both Xbox moddng newbs that don't need or deserve Samsungs dry.gif ) and they didn't even know what DDE was until I put a Verbatim CD-R in my Phillips.

I don't think all Thomsons are trash, but I'd rather not take the chance with them at all. When I first got my Xbox, it had a Thomson drive, so I returned it the next day, and ended up with a Phillips. Was hoping for a Samsung, but my Philly hasn't disapponted me yet, apart from not reading my Verbatim CD-R's, but I don't have anything Xbox related on those anyways.

Yep, Thomsons are good to me. I still use a sammy in my personal box though because it reads cd-rs.

well, i have a thompson and i must admit, the drive is shit. it doesn't give dirty disc errors, but its about as stable as a problemed child on crack when i watch dvd's on it. i had to stop watching dvd's on my xbox because it skips so bad. i will probaby replace with a samsung soon. and yes, the thompson is a paper weight.

-------edit--------

just saw someones comment about the newer tompsons being better, my tompson came with my 1.0 xbox.

I got my xbox used from Ebay. It had the Thompson drive in it and I have never had a problem with. I am still waiting for it to die, but i'm hoping that it doesn't because i don't have the money for a new one.
