I think it depends on the manufacturer of the dvd drive. Mine is a Samsung and doesnt work with xbmc, however the x2dongle free player plays mine fine. What does everyone else think?  <

From the  2003-12-31 changelog
QUOTE
DVD playback (when using autorun and on Thomson drives,
not yet on Samsung)

I just use the stock DVD player, only big disadvantage is that i cant turn it off remotely.

XBMC does seem to work with DVD backups on sammy drives.

Samsung is by far the superior drive, ask anyone on here. It may not work to play original DVDs in XBMC yet. But its the only drive that will read most any sort of media. Mine even reads cheap CDRs very well. Thompson and Phillips drives have all had problems refusing to read CD-Rs, and are even very picky reading DVD-Rs.

Since xbmc was developed like an xbox game (from a source code standpoint), why are there issues with the drive and NOT the media?  What's the differenct when programming between a pos and a sammy?  <
