I just got into Arcane and was wondering what would make a good staff. The possible effects are: Fire, Frost, Shock, Charm, Paralyze, silence, soul trap, and dispel

i like shock...frost is bad because it doesnt effect ghosts and there are a WHOLE lot more ghosts than storm atronachs and fire is good too because, zombies are weak to fire and there are TONS of zombies in dungeons and ayleid ruins...hope that helps...

I never used the staff I got there... if you've got some coin the Staff shop in the Imperial City has much better ones for sale.

Riindir's (sp?) staves are ok.  I did buy Apotheosis and it's ok.   I'd like to find the Umbra of the staff world though.

I just got into Arcane and was wondering what would make a good staff. The possible effects are: Fire, Frost, Shock, Charm, Paralyze, silence, soul trap, and dispel

Fire: A fireball which damages health on contact

Frost: A frostball which damages health on contact

Shock: Electricity which damages health on contact

Charm: A spell which makes people easier to persuade and therefore more likely to tell you things

Paralyze: Stops your enemy in their tracks for a period of time

Soul trap: Hit the enemy with it and when they are killed their soul will automatically be transferred to any Soul Gems you possess (or Azura's Star). You can then use the gems to recharge enchanted weapons (although Azura's star never disappears)

Dispel: I'm pretty new to Oblivion (about 2 weeks playing) so I don't actually know what this does.

As mentioned by someone previously, normal weapons don't damage ghosts so its good to carry some sort of staff to attack them incase your enchanted weapons have run out of charge. Of course, you could use your spells (like flare and shock) but that eats into your Magicka...which I like to keep for some last minute healing.

Also mentioned by someone previously, frost damage doesn't do damage to ghosts.

I currently carry this Goblin Staff (its got a cool Goblin head on it) that does shock damage, its got like 3000 charge so it can hold alot of shots (I think about 140)

I believe Dispel removes any spells that were cast on you.

and you don't have to use only magical weapons on ghosts.  Silver weapons work as well.

Charm is pretty useless.  Use a spell instead.

Paralyze is ok, but a spell is better since you won't have to change weapons when you go in for melee.

Dispel isn't that great until you get to higher level monsters.   If you sneak well, they won't get a chance to use magic to begin with.

Fire, Frost, Shock: All the same.  Don't bother with them because you'll run across many many of them on baddies.

Soul Trap: Again, you can use a spell here.  And since you have to use a weapon to still kill them, you'll be switching back to your melee (or staff) to finish them off.  It's better to use a melee weapon with a soul trap enchantment or use a spell.

They are all pretty much useless if you are playing correctly.

Yeah, some very good points there boxrocker.

Its alot easier to attach a soul trap spell to a hotkey (I've got it on right) and then press the activate trigger than flick to staff use and then flick back...you've got to go back to a weapon to finish them off anyway.

Yeah, don't bother buying any shock, fire or frost staffs. So far I've found staffs for fire and shock (my goblin staff!) and I haven't even gone hunting for them.

Umbra is the [/b]best sword in the entire game...it deals the most base damage of all the swords or at least longswords...plus it is unique which means it isnt just retextured or something...the soultrap effect could be kinda, annyoing though for example, this happened to me, I have found ONE black soul gem the entire game and i only had that soul gem with me and umbra...so i see a rat and go to kill it and i realized that the soul of the rat (petty) went to my black soul gem so its basically useless....It sucked
