Although gameplay is advancing at a much slower rate than the audio/video aspects of games, it is still making progress. A great example are RPGs. RPGs of yore depended on turn-based combat and linear storytelling. Now, we're able to fight freely, branch out into different paths, and even make good/evil decisions that not only affect the character's appearance but his/her strengths and weaknesses to the opposing side as well.
I prefer turn based anyways. Besides, have you ever played fallout? What you did affected your stats, the way you had to play the game, how you interacted with characters, your Karma, etc. That game is how many years old now?

In fighting games, where we used to just be able to block an attack, we can now perform reversal moves that turn the tide in our favor. Combo systems in fighters keep getting more complex and intuitive. Now, I hate Tekken with a passion, but I have to give it respect for its stellar fighting engine.
You mean combos keep getting easier. Thats right, someone can just mash buttons now and make it look like they know what they are doing.

In racing games, car control was merely a left/right and accel/decel option. We can now slide with the brakes, use pressure sensitive controls to gradually ramp up the speed and even feel the effect of our driving via controller vibration.
Like I was saying, I could have all that on Gran Turismo 1 on the PSX with my dualshock. Or I could use a steering wheel and pedals on my computer.

In action games, it used to be mindless "hack 'n' slash." Two words: Ninja Gaiden.
Ninja Gaiden felt like hack and slash to me............

how many classic games are worth playing? not many...
Then why does M$ feel the need to keep having more and more Live arcade games?
Why are there so many dedicated people that make emulators?
I can play duke3d, doom, descent1&2, etc in windows xp, because dedicated people have made it possible.
I have hundreds of ROMS on my xbox, I wouldnt call that, not many.......
