yes ive used steam. I could mention I dont have to physically sign in to Live, its done at startup, Im sure you knew that  smile.gif All the little details like Friends list and messaging just make it so effortless, a sony zombie could even do it  ph34r.gif

Every feature you speak of that Live has, Steam has also, including auto sign in at startup. wink.gif beerchug.gif
Damnit, the whole point is I bought the system and the games, M$ can kiss my ass. They got their money and I am not happy about the 360 games costing $60. tongue.gif

To Shawn_:
Ummm lets be realistic, you would expect servers to be slow/down when everyone is downloading an 8GB game. That is how big my Steam Folder is and that is right after a complete download of everything that came with the Silver package of Half-Life 2. Also give it time before you have to sign into XBL to even play a game. Valve did that as an anti-piracy thing, expect console companies to try and implement it in the future. beerchug.gif

sad.gif you would be missed though, we all need some crabiness every now and then!

the last few xbox games I bought were 55 and 60 anyways, Chaos theory LE, Doom III LE and a few others.

I remember people complaining about the starter kit back in the "Old" days of Live, lol....

"whaaaa, I had to pay $50.00 for Live, but im not smart enough to realize I got a $30.00 headset with it"

kiss my @$$

no, the chances of having to sign-in to live to just play a game is slim to none. Not everyone has interent, yet broadband at that.

Like I said, steam is cool and all but it's not live. Live is standardized, all across the board. I was reading on slashdot today how there are problems with ea"S SERVERS AND GAMES, FRIENDS LIST NOT WORKING ETC. sAME THING WITH STEAM.

opps sorry for all caps, i'm lazy to re-type.

check friends list within a second or two. send people invites or messages and be back ingame, playing within a few seconds.
Steam does all that, just hit escape in a game and there ya go. Friends list and the whole caboodle.
QUOTE
Most pc games you try to join a server and you see youre missing a pack of some sort, be it weapons or maps, Live updates you so everyone across the board is ready to go. I didnt know this was a direct Steam vs Live thing.

I would say it has been awhile since I played a PC online game that didnt download content when you were connecting. Steam updates everything and I mean everything.

I am only using Steam as an example as to why it should be free. Valve makes Steam 100% free and it is every last bit as good as XBL. I have never and will never pay to play online. Example, World of Warcart is a great game. I play it all the time at a friends. I just won't buy it because I will not pay to play. I see it only as a cheap way for companies to squeeze more money out of us.

QUOTE
I Hate Steam
First off. No I don’t hate the byproduct of heated water. What I hate is a little program from VALVe intended to make Gaming "easier" "more accessible" and gosh darn it just plain "fun". Well if they had accomplished this goal than I probably wouldn''t be here complaining about it.

1st problem
Server Problems
The Steam server has only gone down twice on me since I bought Half-Life 2, but, it came at the worst possible time. I had just bought HL2 and brought it home to install it, everything goes fine up until I get to the part where I have to register a name with Steam. Well it gives me some technical crap that nobody but a coder at steam understands and I start to get mad. I check the steam website and the minute by minute progress chart for the server says that everything is A-OK. I stress all day trying to figure out what’s wrong. I open ports, I configure my router I uninstall and reinstall. Everything. At around 9PM (I started at 12AM) I give up and go do something else. I get up the nest morning and check the website and notice something in their forums which reads "the server was down yesterday, sorry for any inconvenience". Well I pretty much blew up. I had spent 9 hours stressing about why this game wouldn’t work and it turns out that they just didn’t want to tell anybody that there were problems until they already fixed it.
I Hate Steam

2nd Problem
Friends List

The (as steam puts it) "Revolutionary" friends network for steam is supposed to allow you to join any game that a friend is playing, get notified when a friend logs in or out, and instantly add friends from any game that runs on steam. Well guess what? Steam DELETES your friends, NEVER tells you when a friend (if they are still on your list) is online and won’t let you Re-add friends that it deletes. Useless.
I Hate Steam

3rd problem
Updates

Imagine this
You’re standing in line at the store and you are getting checked out. You’re about half way through and you get kicked out of the line by the cashier because too many people are getting in line and they need to be let in after you have already started. Preposterous right. Well Steam doesn’t see this method that way.

I was getting the latest Update for CS: Source (which sucked except for the map de_train) it was about a 45min Dl and I got about half way through when I get a message saying (our servers are full, please try again later)
That’s when I think well if i''m already getting the update then why are you kicking me out so new people can get in? This isn’t the first time that this has happened so I wasn’t to mad about it.

I try again like 5 minutes later and get almost done when I get the same message. Now i’m ticked off. I decide that I will just play some Deathmatch for awhile and maybe I will be able to get the update later. SURPRISE!!! There is an update for Deathmatch also. I try to get it and get the message once again. Now i’m pissed but try to keep my self from running into on coming traffic. After trying to get the CS update again I get the message when I am 99% done. At this moment I start wishing that Steam was a dog so that I could kick it in the throat (nothing against dogs but its funny if you know where it comes from).

it has been about 2 hours now and I only have about 45 minutes until I have to go to bed, so I decide I might as well just play CS:condition zero(a game that has been out for awhile now) guess what I see. An Update for CS: CZ. Messaged again.

I am royally pissed off right now and am on my last nerve but for some reason decide to try CS: S again. It Works. Finally I can check out this new map cs_compound.

*sigh* it totally sucked. Simple as that, i’m not going to go into detail because i’m tired and a friend wants to show me some Blockland script he has.

Now Some people might say that complaning about Steam is stupid and that if you don’t like it then go play something else. Well you know what. I don’t want to play something else, I want to play counter-strike and I want to be able to play with my friends. If there was a safe, easy alternative to Steam then I would get it in snap. But there isn’t. So until VALVe gets there stuff together and fix steam then i’m not going to stop hating it.

Friends Network and Favorites List
My Friends doesn't always work and sometimes I lose my Favorites list, how can I fix this?
If you are using a router you need to have the correct ports opened for Steam to use the Friend network.

The Friends network inparticular uses UDP 1200 and UDP 27007.

If you are having problems logging into the friends network, or your friends list is wrong and you're sure you've opened all the right ports then you can try going to your "Steam" folder and look for the "config" folder......eg:

c:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\config

and look for a file called "friendsdata.vdf" and rename it as "old_friendsdata.vdf", a new file should then be created and it should hopefully fix your problem with the friends network.

Personally the Friends network barely ever works for me, so I've given up using it - it just doesn't seem very reliable.

The Friends Network doesn't work behind a router

I wouldn't mind paying to play World of Warcraft online if the game didn't already cost $50.  If the game was $30 and I paid $10 per month, sure.  But $50 + $12 every month... no thanks.  That's why I think Huxley should be free.  We are already paying for Live and we are already paying $50 for the game.  Huxley would do well to offer free online play.

tell me again how they would do "well" if they offered it for free, sounds like they would lose money for not charging for servers, and also normally when things are free they arent great quality and people would stop playing because of it

steam-
not guaranteed to have all broadband users i hate the 56kers and other lamers
not guaranteed cheat protection, i havent played CS:S for some time but they didnt have any at all
that and it takes awhile to find a good constant server that has good mods and player community
no stats or leaderboards between servers unless you sign up with CAL or OGL
intermittent friends list

live-
people cheat, but could easily be fixed, easily avoided
everything is constant rule wise
a friends list that works all the time
more types of games, not just FPS

there are many other comparisons, but $50 is not bad at all.

and sonys no dummy to the whole charging thing. in this months IEEE magazine, 40% of sonys profits come from Everquest servers. they have over 500,000 users at $14-16 a month + game and expansion costs on 11,000 servers. so I think if Huxley charged $5 a month or $50-60 a year to cover costs and some profit i would definately pay

When I was in school, I took an architecture class... one of the professors had this saying about the design of things (products, software, anything):

- Low Cost
- Ease of Use
- Quality/Reliability

...Pick two

Reading the above issues with steam this whole conversation seems to fit the bill...

Well i've only ever had some of them problems a few times, and that was when hl2 first came out, but valve seemed to of fixed all them problems now, sure you will still get a small few people with them problems, but it is a very small few, so all them points that you have made mean nothing now, and doesn't change the fact that steam does everything Xbox Live does but for free.

Still on the flip side, some servers allow 56k and some don't. At least people that can't afford braodband are still allowed to play online.
By your theory, I should have never wasted my time playing Duke Nukem 3d with a friend all the time over a 24400 bps modem. rolleyes.gif

Did everyone skip this line in my previous post?

you think google dosent make money? you gotta be retarded

why do you think everyone just upped their storage to match them?

deftonesmx17: the 56k thing is more under the category of finding a good server

dont get me wrong when i played CS and CS:S and HL2:DM i loved steam and the games. things i didnt like were the inability to play HL2 without an internet connection.

but steam is pc and console gameing is always and will always be different.

since consoles are so proprietary they cant have everyone running their own servers to make it free.

so all and all IMO steam=good xbl=good

if you dont want to pay for xbl stop bitching and go to a tunneling program and bitch about it there.

I have heard this before and  laugh.gif  it sure is a good one.

So your complaint is that you needed an internet connection to play HL2?

Seeing as XBL requires broadband, how would HL2 bother you at all since you need an "always on"  internet connection to use XBL?
