INTERVIEW: Bungie Talks Microsoft Split

Quote

Brian Jarrard, franchise and community director for Bungie explains how a phenomenally successful wholly-owned studio can up and walk away from its parent. Next-Gen's interview within...

* How exactly does this whole "split" work out? How does a studio that was acquired in 2000, a wholly-owned studio, just get up and take off with its name and studio intact?
* Well, it was an interesting set of discussions, as you can imagine. It's been going on for quite a while. Ultimately, it was something that we had to do as a group to creatively continue to expand and continue what we want to do. As [Bungie's Jason Jones] so aptly put it, we're a shark that just has to keep moving to stay alive, otherwise we felt that we'd start to stagnate and potentially lose interest, and maybe even lose some of our teams.
Fortunately for us, Microsoft realized that, and they've been very accommodating to help us work through this and come to an arrangement that ultimately is going to reinvigorate and empower Bungie to continue to do great games and make great games for Microsoft's platforms, as well as getting more Halo games to come from our studio as well.
At the same time, it gives us the freedom down the road to explore other opportunities and challenge ourselves and keep us engaged in what we do. It was about putting together a deal where both groups could get what they're after.

* This also means that Bungie can go multiplatform. We know that Bungie will be concentrating on the Xbox 360, but has Bungie been able to tinker around with other platforms? What do you think of PS3, Wii and the handhelds?
* To be honest, we haven't really put any serious thought into that at all right now. Typically speaking, that opportunity could exist for us down the road and possibly those prospects are exciting for some of our engineers, but on the other hand, we've only made one game for the 360 and that game happened to turn out very, very well. The platform's been really good to us, Microsoft has been really good to us. So for now we're just taking it all in stride. We've got our hands full with some 360 commitments and that's going to keep us occupied for quite a while.
Beyond that, anything's possible, but it's too early to say. We don't have any dev kits in the building for other platforms. There's nothing like that going on right now.

If Halo goes multi-platform, I can honestly say-

1- I will never play Halo ever again
2- I will lose all respect for Bungie
3- Chaos will break out, ushering into a World War 3, in turn, causing the Earth to implode, leaving nothing behind.

bungi also does the splinter cell games. it it would be 2 games for the last 6 years. becides its not always who does the most games. bungi has 2 majer games. tiger games aka the makers of black and white and fable 2 games pretty large company. and they put some years befor thy even relese 1 game look how long black and white took. and even black and white 2 thow admitly not as good. and well fable owned all rpgs and fable 2 by the vids i saw will again.

rockstar maker of gta thats there majer title that makes them or brakes them. yes they have other smaller games but without a gta game every few years they would go out of busness.

as for multi platform halo your a little to late there both halo 1 and halo 2 are pc games. shure pc will probly get halo 3   4 years from now as well. as for a ps3 wii version thats probly never going to happon.

Ubisoft is the company than make the splinter cell games, and I don't think MS put the people than make halo to work on another thing than halo 100% of the time, you see, the more halos and the better they are the better they stay on the bussnees.

FACT: Ubisoft makes the Spliter Cell games.  Given the fact that you couldn't get that very obvious detail correct the rest of your badly written assumptions are equally pointless.  rolleyes.gif

Halo on the PS3 is a halarious thought. Althought it won't happen, I'd like to see a trade in exclusives between Sony and M$.

Sony gives us MGS 4

M$ gives them Halo 3

But back on topic, I don't expect to see anything special from Bungie for another... oooh - 3 years?

Go ahead Bungie, prove me wrong.

You're probably right, they'll release something average in 3 years and people will see that bungie is just another publisher, they're nothing special. They're only doing this for money, they would have made a killing off of the halo series but instead only got a percentage since MS owned them. They can preach creativity all they want but it all comes down to money. I don't fault them but they should be honest about it.

Regardless of all the politics and "oh, Halo is still owned by Microsoft"

this really takes the air out of the empire that 360 has achieved in my opinion.

This is like Disney losing pixar and people saying, "Ohhh no worries, Disney still owns rights to Toy Story"

This is a huge loss to the Microsoft team...huge...

I don't understand why MS would just not let Bungie do what they want and still be owned by MS and be exclusive to MS....
bah....  huge loss, especially this close to Halo 3's release...

I know why, because they're M$  dry.gif

I have never thought of that before, MS wins 300000000 dollars.
How much would have bungie won of that money if they were not owned by MS?

I can sit idle no longer.

This is nothing but a public diversion from Microsoft PR dept, due to the fact that there will indeed be a Halo 4. (I doubt it will be called that though) What company in good standing with common sense would deny themselves success? (Microsoft and Bungie.) Who here does not think H3 ending in another cliffhanger. (Aside from you impatient pussies who didn't beat the game on legendary) Bungie is in a lustful relationship with their highly acclaimed IP know as Halo. They love it so, they want nothing to defile it's 'greatness'.  Emphasized by the impressive ability to keep the game under wraps until the deem it ready. Additionally emphasized by the fact that they also did not want Hollywood to take control of the movie and the "Content Creativity". We all here expect Halo "4", except for the pussies. This one game broke all kind of sales records and expectations. We all have this preconception that the 4th installation of anything is not as good as the first 3, or is just a water down version (Unless it's a freaking Harry potter movie). Bungie is having a hard time topping themselves, so now they’ll just wait, and wait, until our expectations lower, and we want it bad enough to compromise. This is just a move to increase the longevity of the IP, and push it until *gasp* someone wants to do a movie again.

P.S. Do you really think MS will let Bungie just skip out the front door, we all remember immersion and the resulting lost by sony. Now this is the statement that will get me Flamed, but.... (here goes) I don't think Unreal 9 will ever be as good as Halo 3, simply because we all know what to expect....  Go on... I got my fire extinguisher

Look, I was originally a Sony fanboy all the way (ducks & covers as random shit is flung at calibre6) BUT i crossed over because I like the games that were being made for the Xbox and started to not so like to content that was being made for playstation. Where am I going with this??

MS can now no longer pray to the gods that series like Halo series and also PGR series (Bizarre is leaving MS as well right......can't remember, had too many beers before starting this rant and can't be assed to check) are big enough to keep the fans attracted to Xbox. It would be nice to see MS concentrate more on the whole Xbox experience for other areas other than America. I'm from Australia and all we get on Xbox live is the Arcade game experience (meh), game updates, and the very very occasional video ( in Australia on XBL the Simpsons Movie announcement trailer is still available for download...the one where Homer is sitting on the couch in a Superman T-Shirt) and no trailers for the Simpsons has been added, a Robby Williams montage (who gives a Rats Red Rectum ....seriously) and some game videos. Now that's pretty shite compared to the US. I know that there's contractual reasons why some things can't be done here in Aus.

I'm hoping that MS would start thinking a little more broadly towards the market other than the US (not sure what it's like in the UK ......Johnny Wilkinson is an as ass as well.....that's cool we've got the Ashes.)

In summary, I think Bungie (& Bizarre) leaving and that there may be a possibility that they may make Multi-platform games in the future is a little bit of healthy competition between MS, Sony and Nintendo.

A couple points

1. Halo is OWNED (pwnd) by MS, and therefor not going multi-platform. Likewise, they own and NEW Halo projects so no multi-platform there.

2. Bungie is Independent (sort of) but they will not go multi-platform. Think of them as Insomiac Games is to Sony.

3. Thinking that Bungie lost out on a lot of money because they had to share it with MS is bulls**t. If not for MS endless supply of money to feed Bungie during development Halo would be another 1st person shooter with average controls, and lackluster multiplayer. MS is what pushed them into bluckbuster company status.
