yes, but this doesnt look good.

The picture from the console is 16:9 but, it only displays in 4:3 the left and right side is black.

butt if i press start - the menue from the right side is over the black side.

its hard to describe for me, but i only want to say that the console delivers 16:9 picture but in coop multiplayer the game only uses 4:3 picture the rest is black..  but the menu (when i press start button)usw. is fully in 16:9

Sadly I think that Coop on 1 box is going to be 4:3.  I think I remember reading that somewhere.  In any case it does the same this on my box.  Its really annoying.

Both co-op and multiplayer, for me at least, is 4:3.

I wanna say it had something to do with keeping the FPS up. I have no idea though.

No, its apparently, according to bungie, a design decision to try to preserve the aspect ratio and field of view in split screen.

I think it was merely laziness on the part of the developer.  They just didnt want to offer additional aspect ratios.

Alot of people defend the decision, saying that split screen players would get un unfair advantage if given a double wide FOV.

I think that's just silly.  Afterall, there's already 4:3 players and 16:9 players fighting each other, why not 32:9?  Because Bungie is lazy and didnt want to build the textures etc for that aspect ratio!
Most online PC games offer LOTS of aspect ratios.. nobody claims thats unfair!

don't spew garbage you know nothing about... they use the same damn textures no matter what the aspect ratio is... Textures have NOTHING to do with aspect ratio WHAT SO EVER.

thats like saying your car doesn't fit in your garage because it's red...

------

Yes all split screen comes out in 4:3. At first I though "WTF" but after playing it for a bit I think it was the best damn thing they ever did.

split screen player wouldn't get double wide vision. they'd get half-tall vision. ever play Gears of War Split Screen? they pretty much cut the vertical FOV in half and it sucks.

they can't make it wider because going much wider than how the game normally plays and you start running into unnatural circumstances, like being able to see behind yourself on the edges (remember FOV is an angle, go too wide and things start looking really F-ed up)

on a 37" LCD I can see how it'd be a pain... split screen ends you up playing as if you were on a 19"

but on larger Screens it looks just fine and I actually PERFER they do it the way they did instead of squishing your vertical vision like every other split screen game on the market.

I guess it comes down to personal preference... I personally like the way Halo 3 did split screen and hate the way GOW does it

but you're right... options are the best. If either developer had done it right they would have given us options.  wink.gif

QUOTE

POLOFOLKS asks,

Is there a fix in the works for the split screen issue? For most of us it’s killing us to see 2 black bars every time we play with a buddy.

We do that to maintain a proper field of view and aspect ratio on HDTVs. The alternative is a broken Field of View or stretching. One awkward trick you could use is to set your box to 480p and non-widescreen, then let your HDTV stretch the signal. That would be sorta fugly, however.

And yes, I do prefer splitscreen this way, ESPECIALLY compared to how they did it in halo 2.

Each player screen is actually still about 16:9 - they did this so they wouldn't have to give the players a lot of horizontal FOV (field of view), or have to take away from vertical FOV like Gears of War, or distort the screen. I think I'd rather have a bit smaller screen than not be able to see people above/below me.

You are actually getting more in split-screen.

In split screen Widescreen the Field Of Vision (FOV) is 92 degrees.  In single screen widescreen the FOV is 70 degrees.  So you can see a hell of a lot more in split-screen.  If they were to extend the screen to the edges in split-screen, the FOV would be around 110 degrees.  I just wish the single screen FOV was 90 degrees.
