Console Update On Halo3 Dvd Bricking Hacked Xbox?

Can anyone confirm whether console update which starts the halo3 dvd destorys console with modified dvd firmare. My drive is Hitachi 47 with Xtreme firmware. I'm not using Live and don't plan to do so so I don't care if I'm banned or not.
I did an update of dashboard sometime around May/June and didn't update eversince.
Thnx for any response.
I'm using Halo3 PAL CCCLX release.
