Game companies build on previous game engines all the time. Sometimes they start with it as a base and sometimes they just take pieces. ID Software has been doing it for years. I bet there is some Quake 1 code in the Doom 3 engine. Look at some of the custom engines that people have made out of the Quake, Quake 2, and Quake 3 engines. Some of them look incredible. A game engine is completely scalable. A standard API is used (being OpenGL and/or Directx) for the graphics and taking advantage of new technologies in these API's can make huge improvements. Also, higher detailed textures can be applied as graphics cards gain in memory size and these give the impression of an improved engine when it's not. A game engine with high res textures can look stunning next to the same engine with low res textures. I would not worry about what engine they use. If they start with the Halo 2 engine they will build on it and it will look superb.

Outside of graphics I don't see anything wrong with other aspects of the Halo2 engine. Physics, digital surround sound, input, etc. They would spend a lot less time working on Halo 3 if they kept those parts of the engine which work great as they are and have no need to be rewritten.

and that folks is the correct answer.. you just beat me too tongue.gif
