This was said in the press release

"The maps, plus an introductory video featuring Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski, are free thanks to the kind sponsorship by the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series which launches next Monday January 15th, 2007."

The maps are FREE.

The new maps are gonna be great, the bugfixes are great aswell. I do however hate the removing of server names cause i like playing with my buddies. Ranked is gay without buddies. I just hate playin with people with no mics or dont know the 1st step towards good teamwork
