its up to the game maker, obviously they wanted a horizontal split only.

In an interview I saw it was explained that they wanted horizontal split because there wasn't much 'vertical' or multi-tiered action in the game.

I've got a widescreen TV too and I know what you mean.  Sometimes I wish there was the option of a vertical spit for some games.
