I've seen so many articles saying how the controller will rock.  I can't wait to play with it!  And when Gears comes along... pop.gif

Cliffy B thinks that the title may even help the console find a foothold in Japan. It’s no secret that Japanese gamers don’t like FPS games, which is why even the mighty Halo franchise bombed in the country. Gears of War is third-person, and features something Japanese gamers like a lot: big scary monsters

Its funny how these western developers like to stereotype japanese gamers and think they have a chance in japan. If they dont show a certain level of respect for the japanese audience then they wont get it in return.

If all you need is big scary monsters and a third person camera in a game for the japanese ppl to fall in your trap then how do u expect to catch them? I cant speak for the japanese but im sure theyre not that stupid........

GoW will BOMB (like halo) in japan........mark my words. I dont think MS undertsands how to survive in that region yet.

also i dont think they chose a 2nd person view because it would "trick" or draw the japanese audience, they chose it for gameplay reasons

I dont think they did either but i just dont feel that would be a selling point for the game in japan. I feel the japanese are more interested in emotional experiences in their game and halo doesnt give you that, and i dont think GoW will give you that either. RPGs over there do well for this reason, look at MGS, quirky games work for this reason too. Grand theft did well over there cause it appealed to the inner criminal in everyone. Nintendo games make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Sony seems more mature and the games seem very movie like and appeals to those that think of games as a real replacement for movies in the future.

I could be wrong but im trying to put myself in their shoes. I think to them the xbox itself has no personality like the other products on the market so they cant relate to the stuff thats being put on it.

I don't think its stereotyping as much as it is marketing research. And there is nothing disrespectful about knowing the demographics to which you are trying to tailor a product to. Its common knowledge that there are differences in the types of games that sale well here and the kind that sale well over there.

So if I understood that and wanted to release a game there I would probably lean towards releasing more titles that appeal to that region. Cause I don't know about you but their are a few games that were released in Japan for the PS2 but not over here that maybe I wanted to play but never got the chance. Now I wonder why that is dry.gif

You guessed it, MARKET RESEARCH

lol.......there is a fine line between marketing research and stereotyping. Market research is well informed and calculated while stereotyping is born out narrow-mindedness and ignorance. That statement about about big monsters selling a game in japan is straight up ignorant!!

Grand theft did well without "big monsters" and prince of persia 2 bombed despite having "big monsters". That so called "market research" seems a bit off, dont you think? dry.gif
