Hardware Matters
1UP: When you guys were developing for the original Xbox, you coded very close to the metal of the hardware. You made all kinds of custom libraries and made the hardware do things it wasn't designed to do by default. Plus, you also made great use of the hard-drive to achieve what you did in your games. Does the Xbox 360 not having a hard-drive packed in with every unit make it harder for you to achieve the same type of results?

TI: We're making it so that it will run at absolute best performance with the hard disk, but it will still run without the hard disk.

Like most of us here said months ago, the GOOD developers will take full advantage of the hdd. they arent cutting any corners for those that have it.

QUOTE
1UP: Well one of the sad side-effects of the original Xbox's lifespan is that every unit had a hard-drive built in, and yet very few developers ever really took advantage of it to do anything other than to give you a big fat memory card. There was your lowest common denominator, everyone had a hard-drive, and still no one really did anything with it besides you and a few other select developers. So now on 360 you have to do twice the work, since it's no longer standard. Sounds like it sucks.

TI: I was the first person outside of MS to know they were going to do this, the two packages. And when I first heard that, I was surprised, I was kind of shocked, it impacted me at the time. But the point is that what everyone's feeling right now, to us that happened months ago. I've already gotten through that, I've already digested it and got past it, so that's why I really can't get too worked up over it right now. So MS is very clever. They know how to say white is white, black is black and gray is gray, that's how they discuss things. And that's very similar to my development philosophies, so I can relate to them.

I posted in General because it dealt with marketing more than the game itself.

Thanks for thinking of me though   :D

Good read!

I love the way the 1up guy's pushing the "M$ f@#$%d up" cliche on Itagaki,
even after Itagaki confirmed he will take full advantage of the removable hard drive.

great read! just wish these 1up fucks would open their eyes to the 360.

this part made me laugh, he must really hate namco's tekken and soul calibur teams because i have yet to see him say anything even close to good about either game:

QUOTE
1UP: Like Soul Calibur palette swaps?

TI: Bringing up Soul Calibur suggests that Namco likes to do that sort of thing, but let's not broach that today, because we don't want to waste our time on that kind of petty stuff. I think the technique of recycling the characters and just changing the names and keeping everything else the same is just to add meaningless volume is the worst thing you can do, I hate it. I don't have time to talk about something so despicable when we have so much other stuff to talk about.

any person who thinks that itagaki is a sell out needs to remember how much of an outspoken person he is regardless of what anyone thinks of him.  he bows down only to power

That's good news concerning the whole issue of not having the hdd stock.  But as you can tell, Itagaki was not pleased with the decision, but learned to deal with it.

But there is no denying that not having an hdd as standard will limit game performance.  Even when devs make a game to take advantage of an hdd when present, they will still be limited to what they could have done if the hdd was standard, because they will have to make the game run good off DVD.

From off of xbox-scene's front page, Jacques Hennequet (currently developing The Outsider for the Xbox360) had this to say:

QUOTE
Last but not least, after we were told that there was no ability to fly aircrafts in the game due to the DVD drive's inability to stream the environment fast enough in full 720p resolution. We asked Jacques Hennequet (Producer for Saint's Row), "If the Xbox 360 Hard Drive was standard across both SKU's, would flying aircrafts in the game have been a reality?", Jacques simply answered "Yes". While he completely understands why MS made the decision to not include a hard drive in the Core System, I think he felt somewhat disappointed, as it could have opened up much more possibilities within the gameplay for Volition's first Xbox 360 title.

Why MS didn't go with one standard x360, with hdd, for $350 worldwide is beyond me.

first off, the dev who made that comment about the planes was talked about in another thread, and the dev team is a lazy pos because other games are doing it on the 360.

secondly...if you have the hdd, you are getting the best itagaki can pump out, period. he said so. hes not cutting corners just to appease the non hdd owners. No limitations for doa 4 due to the different skus.

Other games? sure, there will be limitations, but as Ive said, and as others have said.. the GOOD devs will max the system out and develop as if the hdd "was" standard, so those who have a hdd will NOT feel cheated.

Epic, the hdd has no bearing whatsoever for their games running on unreal 3 engine, it was made that way.

So you already have games that use the Unreal 3 engine not being hindered by the exclusion of the hdd, and that alone is about 40 360 games.   that we know about.

The GOOD devs wont hold back. And its those GOOD devs that matter, and the ones I care about. Does that solve problems for other games? nope, but I dont care. The games I want badly wont suffer  :)

there are many reasons for having 2 skus, MS is in this to make $$, something they lost out on last gen due to having the hdd standard.

Not only did they lose out on each system sold because they had to pay for every hdd inside, but they made NO $$ on memory cards, something that brings in huge amounts of $$.

Now they will make $$ on the memory cards AND the seperate HDD for $100.00. No more losing 1 billion a year in their gaming dept.

they are in it to make $$. Its a business.

I cant believe we are still talking about this hdd stuff  :uhh:
