Flashing Lights Of Doom
« on: September 12, 2004, 06:19:00 AM »

Hey Guys.

Ive been directed here by a good friend who regards your fault fixing abilities highly. I desperately seek help.

I have been happily using my xbox for several months now without any issues.
I have an XBIT v1.0 chip and 120GB HD.

Today, i installed two games, the first weighed in at 3gb and took my total free disk space down to circa 17gb. I dutifully rebooted said X-Box and evolutionX dash booted up as normal.

I then installed the second game, weighing in at 1.5gb without error and rebooted a second time.

At this point things went tits up.

The machine tries to boot twice to no avail and proceeds to flash red and green lights at me. The chip light is still live so I dont see a problem there.

The dvdrom drive will only open when it feels like it (rarely) and I have no error readouts on the screen. Im getting no video.

ANY suggestions (aside the comedy option "throw it out the window") would be most welcome.

fragging is caused (99 times out of a hundred) by the modchip.

I would check the LPC for dry joints.

Try switching Bios

etc...

I'm having the same problem, and I have narrowed it down to a failing dvd-rom drive.

What I end up doing is using the eject button to power up the xbox, sometimes I can only eject the tray while it's fragging.  So I just keep working the tray in an out a couple times and keep rebooting and it eventually boots up.

But I will and you probably will also eventually have to buy a replacement drive.

I've priced the drives anywhere from $69.99 to $159.99 depending on if it's a thompson, pioneer or samsung.

to be more specific, it flashes green solidly twice while making a whirring sound which can only be the HD or DVD drive and then finally rests on flashing red and green intermittently.

If i have an evox boot disk in the drive i have problems opening it while Fragging,..but if the drive is empty it will open following two presses on eject.

thanks for the replies so far.

Which probably shakes the xbox around enough for the LPC connections to make contact, allowing you to boot.
FRAG (Flashing Read And Green) means there is no bios available to boot. As Arius said, it most likely an intermittent connection on one of your LPC solder points.

The problem was a loose connection on the modchip as most of you pointed out.
Its now booting up again.

Thanks for your time.
