I start with sniper, and do pretty well with it.  Even decent at short range.  But I like to pick up someone else's gun for my secondary.  Preferably shotgun.

I say it depends on the level.  Vast open levels its usually best to have a sniper rifle.  I prefer a machine gun for levels with lots of buildings and close combat.  It also depend how good your reflexes/aim is.  A shotgun and sniper rifle will generally kill with in close combat but if you miss it takes a short time before you can fire again.  I dont really like the regular rifles because they take several shots to kill and can not be fired that quickly but they can be useful as a second weapon if you choose a machine gun.
