Directions App?
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:02:00 PM »

Does anyone know of an application availble that allows you to get driving directions (on xbox, or maybe open source that can be ported to xbox) that runs off the hd and not through the web.

Basically I want a driving directions app to install on the xbox that i plan on installing in my car. That way if I need to go somewhere I havent been I can just put in the 2 addresses and get the directions.

It's not needed to have the actual maps (although that would be nice), but just one that gives text directions from point A to point B.

I know you can buy map programs, but those can't be ported. Maybe there is a database out there that can be downloaded and a program written around it to get the directions?

Any help would be appreciated.  <

Not sure there is an open source program for road-mapping.  It wouldn't be to hard to write from scratch IF we had the data.  Unfortunatly, my girl works in the insurance world, and I can assure you demographic info is pretty darn expensive so I doubt we could get our hands on entire country roadmaps  :D

Do some research though, who knows! I think the idea is pretty cool...  <

I am aware of someone who has installed "Iguidance" and a usb gps using linux.    The software was made for ppc so it supposidly runs light.

I dont know if it is what you are looking for but it had mapping, voice directions, and many other typical map features.

I will be attempting a similar install to this in a couple of weeks (looking for a good inverter) and will let you know how it goes.  <

PCwise, MS Streets and trips is solid gold and only costs like $40.  I guess you could run that in wine on debian on the xbox, but thats getting funny and doesnt take advantage of the xbox properly.  <
