Using Xbox As..
« on: October 18, 2004, 02:39:00 PM »

Does anyone know of a piece of homebrew software of a ported version of a Djing program, eg, Atomix, Traktor, PCDJ ?

It would be very useful, or even a media player where you can change the tempo ?

Anyone know of any or interested in making one ?  <

Two essential things to know on Xbox-Scene:

-No source, no port
Without the sourcecode of a program, there is nothing to be "ported". It would be called "building from scratch". Only killer apps that are useful to a lot of people are build from scratch. XBMC is one example, lots of request in this forum are not.

-Xbox can't be everything
When requesting software for Xbox, people often forget that the Xbox also has its limits. For example many users ask for things way beyond to capabilities of a 733Mhz Celeron with 64 MB RAM. More ontopic, I think that a TV will not be useful at all to display the many many controls a normal DJ-ing program would have. Also an Xbox controller doesn't offer the best way of navigating it too.

Offcourse it doesn't hurt to poll interest, but I'm afraid that given the two things above this thread will keep moving down to the archives ;)  <

Against everything above, I'm a CS major.  I'm into xbox development.  I'm into djing/electronic music.  I'm thinking about *something* music-related, possibly a port of a synth, possibly more.  The xbox looks like a great tool for the music scene and so far nothing's been created.  Linux is an option but I don't think it's the best one, for speed & overhead issues.

tv screen? doesn't really matter.  anything useful should have every command mapped to a button, or over midi or something.  you don't want to be trying to do a smooth cut  and depend on how far the thumbstick moves the cursor to click and drag the thing.  Bad idea.

Anyways, only problem is my lack of time right now.  Same old usual story, but it's true.  midterm season, etc.

anyways, I'm looking into it.  Until that, you could try some xbox-linux stuff.  <

Thanks for your replies

While your talking about needing the source, here is the source to a DJing app for Linux, a scaled down version of this would be great, although i would only need one channel, some might need both, maybe some one could look into it..

Source

For like a DJing console all i'd want would be an MP3 player on the XBOX where you could change the tempo basicly.

This is what i'd want really.

-A player with a tempo slider that could be moved up & down using the up and down buttons on the d pad

-A pitch bend that could be changed with the left & right buttons on the d pad (or even the L & R buttons)

-A button on the pad assigned to play it (CUE Button)

-A button that would skip track

Thats all thats needed i think

I'd use it in sets, link it up to my current dj setup, like having another CD Deck

Run linux, seriously. You'll be able to take advantage of all the neat utils, probably even Final Scratch if you get a USB>xbox adapter. What speed and overhead issues, anyway?

When it gets down to "serious" apps like music, word processing etc, you really are better off running linux. Expecting people to port stuff that basically already runs on the xbox is a bit unrealistic.

The xbox controller has linux drivers, it should be possible to modify gdam to use it without too much effort.

EDIT: I might even have a go at this, it sounds like something I would use too. Maybe even get it working with the LCD screens in current-gen modchips so you don't have to lug around a TV as well.
