Steelbook Cases, Opinions? Comments?
« on: March 12, 2008, 07:26:00 AM »

An empolyee for the company that makes SteelBook cases recently stumbled upon my new site (CollectorsEdition.org) and sent me a bunch of sample cases.

I took a bunch of pictures and did a write up on them here: http://collectorsedi...ecial-packaging

Personally SteelBook style cases are what got me into collecting Special Edition games in the first place. I talked to a DVD collector friend of mine over the weekend and to my surprise he had never even heard of them, or seen a SteelBook case before  ohmy.gif

Anyway I was curious what other's thought of these cases, have you ever heard of/seen them, do you like them better than regular cases, and how much extra do you think they're worth over a regular plastic keep case?

that's the version of stanglehold i have.

i love steelbooks, the steelbook alone in my opinion makes it worth an extra fiver, even if the game and contents are exactly the same.

My favourite steelbook is lost planet, it's just the best looking case design in my opinion.

Also they are far less likely to get damaged than the steel tins.

i think they're pretty cool.  i personally like the Doom 3 Collectors Edition only cause i own just that collectors edition for my 360, but only cause it has more gaming for my dollar.  sure Doom and Doom 2 are old games, but i dont mind playing through a couple extra times even after i beat them.  all other collector editions....if they dont have anything to add to the gameplay then i ignore them.

I sadly own only one, but in my opinion the best.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

I agree they are nice to have, but i use gamefly and sadly that limits me to standard editions. unless a game i really like comes out and warrants a day 1 purchase.

sadly SCCT is a knock-off steel book

though I agree that it's a nice CE. in-fact I think it's my favorite collector's edition for the Xbox 1, and I have nearly every CE for the Xbox 1 that was released (with the exception of some EA trash)  smile.gif

Well the only steel case I have bought is Halo 3 - and the disc was scratched, which kind of put me off them. Not really bothered tho because I tend to buy a game, leave it in the drive until I have finished/got fed up with it and then it gets shelved until I can be bothered trading it in!

I had the PD0 case I just wasnt a fan of the game so I ended up selling it

I dont have a lot of money now, so what i can scrounge up to buy what games I can is just enough. Maybe once I graduate and get a good paying job then I might spend that little extra.

*sigh*

sadly the PD0 case is also a knock-off... AFAIK it was the last knock off to be made (Halo 2, Doom 3, Chaos Theory, and PD0 are all fakes)

but if you liked that then a real steelbook would knock your socks off.  laugh.gif

how do you know it's a fake?

Because it wasn't designed and manufactured by Scanavo... 100% of the metal cases for those games are fake steelbooks.

Some tell tale signs
-the plastic inside the case on a real steelbook is clear with more artwork on the back side of the metal shell. Most fakes use a cheaper solid colored black or gray plastic so they don't have to print on the inside of the case.
-the binding of the case on a real steelbook goes almost to the very top and bottom of the case. The fakes leave a good half inch of space between the end of the binding and the top or bottom of the case.
-real steel books use a high quality steel and usually have a smooth brushed metal finish to them, fakes use cheaper steel and cover it up with a heavy gloss coat

Basically the company that came up with the idea for SteelBooks, designed it and patented it and then began trying to get game and movie companies to use them. MS being the shady pricks they are took sample cases and brought to some cheap Chinese manufacturer and requested that they make knock offs at a cheaper price... and that's why cases like Halo 2 and PDZ are "fakes" they're still MS products but they're not real SteelBooks. Of course there was a lawsuit for patent and trademark infringment and that's why PDZ is the last fake SteelBook that will be released.

Devil May Cry 4, Lost Planet, and dozens of European SE releases all use real SteelBooks and if you had them side by side with a fake the differences are easily apparent and the real SteelBooks are clearly a much higher quality.
