You can downplay achievement points as much as you want, but the point is that Gamepro's editors were pretty biased in their article (for those of you who've yet to read it).
The games they used for comparison didn't even back up their opinions.

M$ has every right to defend their product, and achievement points ARE something that they can brag about as an extra perk for Xbox 360 owners....

Agreed 110%.  I love achievements  and my buddies and I use it as a "game within a game"
where we always try to one up each other.

If it wasn't a factor then why is SONY trying so hard to implement it into "Home" with a trophy system? And why did capcom include "accomplishments" into the PS3 version of DMC4?

No doubt was that article biased and full of errors (COD4 does not have dedicated servers on PS3).
No one can blame M$ from disagreeing with trash like that.

I had a PS3 ages ago and got rid of it as I just wasn't playing anything on it (I made a few quid too as it had back compat), but I went and got another PS3 last week through my mate who works at gamestation (mates rates smile.gif ).

I got it for uncharted which I had played a little of and thought that it was pretty good.  I also got heavenly sword and ratchet and clank too.  To be perfectly honest these three games are pretty nice and the further you get into uncharted the better the graphics get.  I have also setup remote play and have used it to watch Divx and Xvid content on my PSPwhich is quite handy (I can catch up on lost while in the bath).

Now, here's the but, graphically it has not blown me away and I haven't seen a single thing that couldn't be reproduced on the 360.

The XMB is a mess (the custom themes ARE good though, and tools are available to make your own).

The PSN shop could be done much better.

I haven't played online yet so i can't comment on that, but, I have no problems shelling out for my gold membership on the 360 as I feel that i get back more than my moneys worth.

Overall, considering what i paid for it, I will only be buying PS3 exclusive games until such time where a multi platform title is vastly superior on the PS3 (none so far). These exclusive games are solid enough but the implementation of the XMB has missed the mark.

Don't you think any strong addiction is bad for your real life?

These achievements points can be seen as a bad point by most 'wise' people.

MS shouldn't talk so loudly about them, that will scare all parents.
It's not a quality of 360. It's a drug used to catch consumers.

Examine some achievements... They can be taken only by replaying several times the same game... Nothing is better than that for ruining your real life free time... and bring you nothing in return, except ego.

A journalist wrote some time ago he lost all his points (after a HDD replacement I think). His conclusion? He felt angry, then relieved. Freed...

I wanted a next gen console with online play - Xbox 360 is thus the one i went for

If i wanted a HD player too, i would happily get a PS3. As a games machine, Xbox 360 wins hands down

wow... Most of you are even more poorly informed than the GamePro editor who wrote the article in question..

Here's Some food for thought:
1. Achievements and Gamerscore Achievements and Gamerscore are NOT THE SAME THING, what you're all referring to as "Achievement points" is gamerscore, there is no such thing as  "Achievement points"... That may just be semantics but let me explain why this is important...

Achievements provide a list of goals for the game, Lets say you finish the story on a game and it takes you 12 hours to do... what do you do now? with most consoles you'd just throw the game on the shelf and pickup something new, with Achievements you have a list of challenges you can attempt to get more replay value out of the game.

It's worth MUCH MUCH more than a point value... it's worth REPLAY VALUE. Through Achievements I've got double to triple the replay value out of nearly every game I own, that alone is cause for me to buy the 360 version with all other things being equal.

real "Gamerscore whores" don't care how good a game is, they're content playing the trashy games based off of kids movies because they're easy points. These people don't play games like DMC4 because it's too difficult to get points.

2. The GamePro Article showed no PS3 benefit to graphics Nearly all of you assumed that the GamePro article was giving an edge to the PS3 in terms of graphics... have any of you actually READ the GamePro Article? out of the 4 games they compared they noticed a differences in graphics in 2 of the games, and both of them gave the edge (albeit slight) to the 360...

3. The biggest difference was controller layout and online servers If there was no real difference in graphics then what was the difference you might ask? Apparently DMC4 was a "clear winner" on PS3 because they thought the controller layout was better... yup according to GamePro the face buttons on the PS3 controller were easier to hit than the 360 controller... I don't know how that's possible really, and personally I don't care what the journalist says about the controllers I find the PS controller design to be incredibly uncomfortable no matter what game I'm playing.

COD4 was "better on PS3" because of "dedicated servers" which is untrue, COD4 does not have dedicated servers on PS3, this was such a important point to the article that they even made some huge graphics to hit the point home that the 360 sucks because it didn't have dedicated servers...

and both COD4 and Burnout revenge were "better on PS3" because the match making interface was slightly faster and easier to use... Really? is that a worth while selling point?

I can see how some x-plat games will have a more streamlined online interface on non-360 platforms because the developers can roll their own, but the 360 is standardized and better than average across the board with IMO is much better than having a few good online interfaces and a loot of crappy ones.

Not to mention, if I'm buying a game based on multiplayer, I'm going to buy the one for the platform that all of my friends own (playing with strangers is overrated), and right now, none of my friends own PS3s.

-------------------
I encourage all of you to actually read the GamePro article, the impression I got is that the author knew what he wanted for the outcome and then wrote the article to support his desired result.

The article was the worst comparison I've ever read and 100% written by a Ps3 fanboy. It lacked detail and deep, and no doubt was written by someone with little to zero technical knowledges. I addition to this they stated graphics in some games to be exactly the same, which is not true. Some of the mentioned games have higher resolution textures on the 360 (CoD4 for example), just look at gametrailer's comparison.

Also most of their reasons to choose ps3 are really childish and lacking of real weight.

ms can go on about achievments being a deciding factor.. but I think more along the lines of... do I want to play this game online for free... or will I rather not play it online.

Or you could save your allowance and pay 50 bucks for an entire year.....

I think Gamer points are a big thing.  With people getting 100K+ points that's got to say something. I know their probably cheating but that still should be factored in.

Back when I got my first PS1 I liked that controller the best until I got my mad cats wireless controller for the xbox and the 360's is even better.  Now I don't want to go back to the PS controller.

As for graphics, with the hardware that was jammed into the PS3, if it doesn't pump out un-debatably better graphics its a loss for the PS3.

Then there are the games.  For multi platform games I'd go with the 360 because I believe it's the best system.  I haven't seen any exclusive games that I would like.  I'm sure that would change once I get a PS3 as long as they have the free demo downloads like XBL.

on a side question, how do I figure out my 360 version number.  I've searched up and down the X-S forums and Google but can't find anything.

no hdmi port = v1
hdmi port and 203W power consumption = v2
hdmi port and 175W power consumption = v3

for the power consumption you can check the ouside of the cardboard box your console came in (it's printed right on it), I'm not sure where else you could find that info.

v4+ aren't out yet (but they have been rumored/announced) theoretically a v4 5 or 6 would have a power consumption of around 140-150W

Another thing I would like to add.  Is people are still figuring things out on the 360 and testing innovative things to do with the system.

A new game coming out "Universe At War" will actually give you a gameplay benefit when you get an achievement!  (Its an RTS game and the units will be stronger, etc after you get the acheievement)

If people really like this experiment then more developers will use it and the 360 acheivement system takes on a whole different dimension and level.

I love going for achievements, and last night I managed to get "Mile High" on veteran in COD4 giving me the full 1000 points. The only other game I have a full score for is King Kong so I am well pleased! If it wasn't for the achievements I would have never bothered so I agree with Twisted about the replay value.

Am I the only person here who's actually played a PS3?
nearly every game I've played has some sort of achievement list, Resistance, Rachet, Drakes
the only differences being a) no gamerscore to go with them  B)they usually reward you with something in-game (new outfit, cheats, weapons etc)
so saying they are absent from the PS3 is false
I think the bigger issue for some of you is that nobody can see you've achieved them.
So the replay value is there, but not the bragging rights.  I'm not dismissing bragging rights,  as that's the source of competition, which is cool, but don't distort the issue by pretending that replay value is absent from the PS3.  All that's missing, for some of you, is motivation.
