Um, Source was updated for Orange Box.

Pretty sad times for PS3. The only award the explicitly win is under the PS3 category. Ouch.

well duh, they had to add new textures tongue.gif .  the graphics, framerates, and everything else that can be noticed when playing orange box is pretty much the same though as the original release of hl2 and css in 2004. so it is really dumb that they got breakthrough award.

Portal was mentioned for "breakthrough technology", not HL2.  It brought breakthroughs in gameplay and level design that will be imitated for years to come.  Nothing like it has been seen before, and if it had been a full-length game it could easily have competed for game of the year.  It also has probably the best original song ever found in a video game - too bad there's no category for that.

I really don't agree with the list...but I guess that's what you get when you have a bunch of people that clearly don't play video games voting on them

Source Engine has gotten several updates over the years. It's gotten new particle systems, new facial animation system, dynamic shadows (cast by the flashlight for example), landscape/flora rendering, "Cinematic physics" (basically complex animations pre-generated outside the game by artists).

All those things were new just for the Orange Box games. Not to mention that from the beginning the Source Engine did not have things like HDR for example. That's also stuff that's been added later. You can't compare the engine to what it was 3 years ago, it's not the same.

I agree that they probably dident take any of that into account when they chose Orange Box for that award though. They probably just looked that Portal gun and said "ooooh, aaahhh".

Agreed, the main source update I was thinking of was HDR. That was the whole point behind HL2 Lost Coast.

ROLF.

That 'fueled by dew' thing is another example of corporate americana trying to reach out to its audience, and failing miserably. I mean, who saw that and said "whoa, thats cool, fueled by dew, I'm extreme, dew is extreme, fueled by extreme, whoa, thats off the chain...." or some inane nonsense like that.

Its too bad they don't just make a product and advertise it as that. Just make the soda and shut up please, leave my games alone. smile.gif

too bad the original portal has been out for a while.  its called "narbacular drop" and its for the pc.  some college students made it as a final project for digipen, then got hired by valve a few months later.

Except it wasn't even near to level of gameplay or technology portal was.

With that said I definitely don't agree with bioshock being goty. It was tons of fun, yes, but it was about 6 hours of fun then I never touched it again. It almost felt like one of those games I just wanted to beat to get it over with after a while.

Not a single mention of mass effect, except best RPG.

Maybe it's just me but bioshock and mass effect are both RPG's. Mass effect wins best RPG but bioshock wins game of the year?

Also notice 75% of those games are published by EA. I'm sensing this list went far and beyond buyouts.

Bioshock isn't a RPG, it may have RPG elements but that doesn't make it an RPG. It's mainly an FPS if anything but I prefer to just think of it as one of the best games ever, top 20 at least biggrin.gif

Bioshock is about as much of an RPG as mass effect is.
