Java Support In Linksboks
« on: October 04, 2004, 02:12:00 PM »

The most practical use for this would be using AIM express, which would be VERY cool on the xbox. I know this has been mentioned once before, but no one replied among many other discussions about the app, so i am making a whole new topic about this.

Java support would be MINT with Linksboks. Anyone know if this has been looked into?

EDIT:

I checked out the linksboks homepage, and here is a list of what i found as features:

.....
Builtin image display for GIF, JPEG, PNG, XBM, TIFF in graphics mode
Anti-advertisement animation filter in animated GIFs?
Javascript support with full user control over script run
Bookmarks
Background file downloads
Automatic reconnection in case of TCP connection breakdown
.....

Javascript support? This was listed as a feature of Links, but i didn't find any info on it for LinksBox. Is it there and am I just blind?

Already they have javascript support, that has to have been difficult because they had to build it from scratch (most likely). Even making the browser from scratch on the pc with windows (without using the webbrowser control) is difficult. To implement java, they would have to build the runner from scratch, which even for windows took years. I would suggest just stick to using your pc for aim and java and be impressed at what people have already gotten their xbox to do ;)   <

Oh don't worry, i definitely appreciate it. I don't program or anything like that, so i don't know the work entailed in making javascript work, but you say they already have javascript support? as far as i know, this didn't get succesfully ported from the Links for computer.  <

From the release notes:
QUOTE
Yes, Links' Javascript engine is here, but it's disabled by default as it creates more problems than it solves. Remember this engine is highly experimental and very incomplete. Don't expect it to run anything but the simplest scripts (if you're lucky).

So no AIM express I think.

Javascript and Java are not same thing btw. First one is a scripting language implemented in browsers. Second one is a programming language developed by Sun and requires a "virtual machine" to run ( http://java-virtual-machine.net/other.html#jvm , anyone interested in porting a JVM? ;)).

ps you can run Java apps on Xbox with Gentoox or Xebian.

this may be getting off the normal topic a smidge, but can you run gentoox or xebian as an app from a dashboard?

I can't remember where i heard it, but somewhere i remember someone telling me or reading somewhere that if you want to use your xbox as a computer, you can't play games on it anymore, but i'm not familiar with gentoox and xebian. I'll do some reading, but if you could answer that one q it might be helpful.  <
