FF XIII Running on Same 'Cross-Platform' Engine as new FF MMO

From gamasutra.com:
Quote

Square Enix's next MMO [Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess] will be cross platform and cross region. "A lot has changed in the last two years," he says [Hiromichi Tanaka, an executive officer at Square Enix], referencing the game's first announcement at E3 2005. "Development is proceeding smoothly now, with the framework now beginning to take shape. Last year we went through a development reorganization, with the development of our own cross-platform middleware - the white engine. This is the foundation for FFXIII and the new MMO. It's safe to say that it won't be much longer before I'm able to unveil even more secrets about what the future holds for Square Enix."

WotG is not a new MMO, it's just an expansion pack. Meaning that it's still going to be running on the same core engine from 2001. I don't know what this white engine is, but it sounds awfully like a new PlayOnline, and that's just made of suck.

Edit: You've got your summary wrong. The article is talking about a totally new MMO, and just mentions WotG in the paragraph above it.

The White Engine is Square's newest and most advanced engine, the one they are using for FFXIII on the PS3 (remember the trailer?). It was believed to be built around the PS3, but speculation that it might be multi-platform has made it's way around. This, if true, seems to confirm it.

Yeah, when I first made that comment I just read the summary like an idiot, and the summary says that WotG is the new MMO... I then read the article and now understand.

(And no, I don't remember the video. Final Fantasy sucks. I just play XI for the points)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

So the white engine has gone from being "only possible on the PS3" to cross platform?

Perhaps we will be getting a "FFXIII announced for xbox 360" sooner than we think.  (I also think there's a 85% chance of MGS4 coming to 360 shortly after the PS3 launch)

Wouldn't be surprised if it went down like this, companies now a days have to or are forced to go multi platform in order to make a profit, though it's still too early in the game to know how it well all turn out, more and more we are seeing that games are being released as multi platform then exclusive.
