Valve: Half Life2 using 93-94pct of the Console's Power

* PSU: What is the primary advantage with the technologies for next-gen? Are there differences between the 360 and PS3 that you found aided you in the game?
* Charles Kieg: We defintiely feel next-gen technology aided truly in our development process. You know---you have complexer AI, you have more characters to work with, an enhanced ability to work with the animations on a higher scale--all that stuff. The only difference between the 360 and PS3--which both as a collective helped us develop The Orange Box is definitely there. For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console's power given our current optimization. With the PS3, we can't exactly say what power cap we reached, since no developer really knows where the boundary is for the PS3. We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU's and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell. We're still optimizing for PS3 more because we can, which can explain the slight delay to you. But no worries, everything is going smoothly to put down any rumors.

Update: When contacted about the last answer, Valve stated that they are still continuing to optimize for the 360, so the power % is just the estimate for their current optimization. They still have a long way to go.

I wonder how we should interpret "uses 93-94% of the console's power". Does it simply mean "93-94% of the time the hardware is not idling but actually running code"? (which at least the GPU was designed for: making it easy to use it) Or does it mean HL2 is close to achieving the best possible results the Xb360 will ever be able to handle? Which I highly doubt given the rather "unconventional" GPU design. No fixed-function pipeline but unified shaders instead. And using all three CPU cores is no simple task either.

My biggest "fear" is that this statement will make a lot of MS/Xb360-bashers happy just because most people will simpy misinterpret it.

They probably mean theyre running code all the time or something like that. HL2 is not a graphically intense game. Theres fun things like physics and ai and the like, but nothing really extraordinary. Id say games like Dead Rising, Bioshock, and Gears of War make the most of the 360s power

93-94% of the power, hmm did you guys know I crapped out gold?  blink.gif

Console out 2 years and not everything can possibly be learnt and developed to take advantage. Half life 2?  Erm ran on the Xbox 1. Yes it will be redesigned graphically but it's still an old game in comparisson. Despite being made now.

Before this thread gets too big with the 94% thing..... be sure to read the quote thouroughly.

"For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console's power given our current optimization"

'Given our current optimization'.......this means that the game is not completed and will be further optimized for performance as development continues. Once the game is complete, its possible it will use much less of the system resources. Don't get me wrong, i know the 360's power is not limitless, but I think it has more potential left in it for to keep up with PC gaming advancement (except Crysis - all bets off there)

I would like to have game that uses as much ~100% resources.

If you have 30% unused GPU time - why not make game native 1080p , add 4xAA or more, 8xAF or more, motion blur, post processing, 10bit HDR, 16bit HDR, 32bit HDR ? 60fps?

IF you have spare CPU time - better AI, more objects, better phisics, etc.

Make game looks better, not "we are soooo smarrrt we only use 15% of console power in out shitty game !!!on11!oneone!"

PS.
IF they arent using SPU does that means that they use only PPU?
So for WHOLE GAME only 1 PPU is used ?

So X360 with 3 PPU has 2 PPU UNUSED?  (PPU unit in X360 is slightly better than PPU in PS3 - it has one VXM unit to vector calculations that PS3 lacks and 1MB cache for disposition vs 512kb in Cell)

Only 33% (or less) of X360 CPU power is used?

They should talk to Sega and license Blast Processing to speed things up.

Is this article for real or not?. The Link doesn't work anymore and it looks to have been pulled from psu.com.

There's no way those numbers given can be true.  Everyone knows that Madden 08 runns at a smooth 60 fps on a 360 while it struggles to keep up with 30 fps on a PS3.  Unless they're only using stick figures on the PS3 version, it's got to be struggling to keep up with the 360 version.
Remember where this article is coming from: psu.com, a PS3 fanboy site.  Chances are, this probably part of the SDF lies.  (And yes, I do have a PS3.)

"Valve confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Half-Life 2 will arrive weeks later after the 360 and PC retail release on October 10th, 2007."

I think that all that xx% bulls**t is because they have to find excuse for delay.
